‘Laser Blue’ - What did you think then & now?

Im sure read somewhere (possibly on here) that it was the fourth best selling shirt in England during that season. Regardless it was hugely popular at the time and better than the turgid shit Umbro had slopped out to us previously. There was a lot of hype to the kit and load of the shirts got stolen from Trafford park prior to release. A fella got arrested on Deansagte the day before the official release wearing one.

Umbro/Nike/Puma have missed a trick by not trying to reintroduce it over the last few years.
Puma's 125th anniversary shirt wasn't a million miles away from the Kappa blue. I've always like the more vibrant shade of blue used in the 70s shirts.

When Kappa came in for the start of the 97/98 season they brought in one of the most iconic City home shirts in history. The football at the time might not have been the best but that home shirt stood out as something new & different and was instantly recognisable to football fans across the country.

One of the biggest changes from previous shirts was a new darker shade of blue which was given the name ‘laser blue’. This was brought in because the classic City blue under Umbro had become so pale - almost representing how ill & pale the club had gotten over the years.

The laser blue continued for a few years after, including during our switch to Le Coq during our 99/00 promotion season back to the PL & would ultimately be worn during for the last time in our final game at Maine Road in 2003.

There didn’t seem to be many dissenting voices at the time but in the modern day I could see a change like this leading to fans being up in arms - so what did you actually think of it back then & what do you think of it now?

Love em. We wore the one with white sleeves when I went my first game in 2000. Lost 1-0 at maine road to Newcastle, shearer bagged for them. Can’t recall much else cause my 7 year old mind was blown. The other 2 with black stripes on sleeve reminds me of ali.b

Really liked the design of the Kappa one (the others are fucking terrible though!). Just never wanted the colour. City’s colour is light blue, not that Napoli/Zenit shade of blue.

At the time I loved it. Very much a time and place. Went to City home and away with a bunch of about 8 of us. All in our early 30s. Only about 4 of us still going.

Never really liked it TBH as I have always been a traditional "Sky Blue Man" , however in those days the shade of blue was the least of my worries as we dragged ourselves out of the pits of despair. The laser blue kit does have its special memories for me as it was the period when my son started watching City with me during the Royle/Keegan years. I still have photos on the wall from those days and they are precious memories. Let's leave it at that though, and stick with our traditional Sky Blue.
