His fitness and defensive work rate seem to have improved a lot since last season, and he plays like he gives a shit.

If he was on the pitch with 10 teammates who matched his commitment and desire (rather than perhaps 1 or 2), we'd be top of the league.

I fully get that some people don't rate him, don't think he justifies the price tag, would rather replace him with someone of a different profile, or the same profile but faster/younger/more of a goal threat. That's an interesting conversation and we'll probably be having it for as long as he's at the club, maybe even after he leaves.

But we can't sit here griping that he's not able to win matches for us single-handedly without acknowledging that he shouldn't have to.

He's not the superstar in a mediocre Villa team anymore, the talismanic captain instructed to roam the pitch looking for opportunities to change the game.

He's an (I think effective) cog in a well-oiled machine. He's slotted in pretty well to a team full of elite players, serial trophy winners, the odd talent that even gets described as generational, all working under one of the best and most successful managers in the world.

He's got duties and responsibilities that he never had at Villa (and hardly even has at England, where he's mostly used as an impact sub, a last throw of the dice, so his adherence to the demands of the system is a little less crucial than it would be if he was a starter). He's adapted his game to give Pep what he wants - he holds the width, he makes space for others, he protects the ball, he tracks back.

He's working hard, doing pretty well and getting better. The team has enormous winning pedigree and, especially this season, we look better with him in it.

He's not the problem.

Well said.
