10 | Rayan Cherki - 2025/26

Got to give him a bit of time before being like some who are writing him off after less than 2 games in the PL. He's a maverick type - remember when David Silva came, it took him a while to fully express himself as a player. I hope Pep doesn't try to change that desire from Rayan to try things others cannot. We don't need another ball shovel merchant who slows the play and makes us a little boring to watch. More about finding a balance in the rest of the team that allows him to do the unusual stuff. Be patient blues he is going to be a star.

Reminds me of Nasri. Exciting and loads of flair but not the player you need when shit hits the fan, like yesterday.

Too early to be drawing that comparison imo .

He needs time .

He's played 200 games in his career and this has been how he's viewed in France that entire time.

He's young, but he does need to change markedly if he's going to be successful at the top level.

Like every 21 year old, he needs to develop his game.
Unlike every 21 year old, he has a unique talent to create and magic in his boots.
Embrace it, you don't often get the chance to witness it.
Just a FYI but he turned 22 about a week ago, but carry on.

He’s got serious ability. The question is “where and when can we best utilize these abilities?” Is it when we are under fire against a strong determined midfield snapping at our heels or is it against a team that sits back in a low block and he finds the hole in the Swiss cheese? TBD, but he didn’t cover himself in glory in a midfield that was overrun by pace and power yesterday!

Early doors, but we’ve seen enough to believe he can be a seriously good player FOR CITY if he develops in the right way.

I will hold my hands up and admit my first thoughts on David Silva was he is too lightweight and will never be up to the pace and power of the Premier League. I even said he was a poor mans Stephen Ireland..,.On reflection I don't think I've seen a more talented footballer in the premier league....That's why I sit in the stands

Cherki for me has several defects in his game as a starter against a top side, mostly on defense, but also on offense.

On the bright side: Cherki is excellent on the ball. And can make a killer pass or a one-two to unlock the defense.

At the same time - Cherki is arrogant - making the unnecessary risky flick way too often - his back-heel pass attempts illustrate this.

Moreover, Cherki is too ready to make an attempted long pass to one of our players making a run forward. At a guess, I think that this sort of pass works out at best 1 times in 4 with the outcome being that the pass leads to a turnover - and maybe 1 times in 8 - that it leads to a goal scoring opportunity. In other worlds, Cherki is going to chip the ball forward too often.

On defense - Cherki is a liability. Our defense relies on a high press - when the ball turns over, every player needs to press. Cherki eventually presses - one or two seconds too late (not the only player in our side guilty of this). Which means that our press is ineffective... and we're wide open once we turn the ball over.
I’m not convinced because he does flicks it means he’s arrogant

Different sort of player but I'm reminded of Kevin the early days with us. Had his way of playing, took risks, didn't always come off. There was a huge amount of agro on here with people saying he was a liability and have the ball away all the time. I'd rather have a few players like that, even if it's a hard watch sometimes, because if they develop in the way we hope, their willingness to take risks and do things no one else does means they can turn into something really special.

Fair enough.

That said, if I were playing midfield and some opponent made back-flicks and seemed to be insultingly languid on the ball - I'd fucking kick the hell out of that arrogant prick every time I was near him.

If we aren't gonna play him as a 10 in a 4231, then the next best is an inverted RW in a 433 or RAM in a 4222.

He doesn't have the defensive work rate as a centre midfielder.

But Foden, Reijnders, and Bernie have it.

He looked weak on Saturday and for a stocky guy that was surprising. Bullied off the ball too easily and the physicality of this league might find him out

He's going to need a bit of time to adapt to that kind of intensity, he's only just 22 and has come from the french league, reckon he could be decent once he gets up to speed

I remember when David Silva's first season. Always getting barged off the ball going to ground. I thought he was too small n' skinny to hack it. He never put any weight on or got any taller. He just got tougher and more skillful. Plenty of time for Cherki to find his feet. He exudes ball skills so I'm not worried he won't take to English football, he just needs time to settle in.

I thought he didn't do too badly on Saturday.

He's better off the ball and is better defensively than I thought he was.

I mean for his price we shouldn’t really place huge expectations on him, we could’ve ended up with Wirtz

I like him but I would like certain hierarchy established considering talent, experience, success, career and everything

Phil Foden is and should be our n1 attacking midfielder. He played best football as RAM, but while KDB was here, Pep constantly moved him to LAM as soon as KDB was fit, like for example away game at Madrid Foden played as RAM and scored that goal, at Etihad KDB was fit and Pep moved foden to LAM, which I think was one of the reasons we lost that tie as Foden that year was doing wonders and needed to play that exact position to shine.

So now Cherki arrives, he also feels comfortable playing LAM, so what's for Foden ?

Like KDB had cemented that position and deserved it and even though he was in form or out of form club trusted in him and gave number of games to find his form, I think Foden should recieve same treatment if we want him to become even bigger player than he is now.

And Phil deserves that.

So if Cherki won't disturb Phil and he will find position for himself which isn't the one where Phil plays his best football, then that's the best scenario.

I mean Cherki can be great, but Phil is already great and that's the difference.

Agree. He has an arrogance that we need, he wants to get in the ball and make things happen. He looks a quality player, great first touch.
