10 | Rayan Cherki - 2025/26

Football Transfers article from 2023 described him as causing a fracture in the dressing room, mocking his teammates, and being allowed to leave for the good of the team.

Just one example.

I understand he’s exciting. But there have been games where’s had no impact. Games where he’s been selfish with the ball. I hope he comes good, but he lacks maturity, seems childish. The stick Savinho gets here could easily apply to Cherki as well.

In another interview a goalkeeper he played with explained that he learned to not expect a cutback or final pass because Cherki would just keep dribbling or attempt a chip shot and that his attacks came to nothing.

I hope he comes good, but his head isn’t there imo.
He is an exciting talent ,but has a lot to improve on. There were games he was amazing and games, where defenders read his every move and he couldn´t find anyone with his clever passes.
let´s hope he will be as good as people here think he will be. Need some true world class chance creator in this team.

1779881301438.pngDon't think the same level of 'stick' can really be applied when his output is far better in a shorter timeframe.

Can't really apply your logic from what an individual was allegedly like a few years ago to now either. Are you the same person you were at 19? I'm going to guess that you are not.

It will be interesting to see how Maresca takes to his game, and whether Cherki will rise to the challenge of being a two-way footballer.

So what? That was a different team, he was a young lad.

He’s a wonderful, skilful and creative player, a brilliant talent that I want to see playing for us for years.
Absolutely - also fans should never believe all they read by so called journalists. You'd think given the stuff we've had to endure from the UK press since we began winning things would make every City fan sceptical and just view things with their own eyes.

Cherki when he played made us a better team fact. Even when he was a little off he still created chances that should have been taken. I really want to have a player that is a bit of a maverick and from all the interactions that I've seen Rayan seems to have the trust of his teammates.

Some fans just want players to run around like maniacs - for example, I loved Paul Dickov but would I think he would make the difference against Madrid in the later stages of the CL. I want us to have a balance in the team that allows our best creative player the freedom to make the team tick.

As you say some fans just don't like certain players and I have to admit that I'm not the biggest fan of Savinho and Lewis but for anyone to not see what Cherki offers us is mind boggling to me.

End of this season gave a perfect example. He was in the box, back to goal with every defender on him. Haaland was unmarked on his left waiting for the ball. Cherki never looked up or even attempted to pass the ball. Haaland was so frustrated. Haaland was unmarked in the box ffs because the defenders knew to focus on Cherki.

Now ask yourself if it’s worth it. If Haaland doesn’t want to play with him and decides to leave, is it worth clapping for the dancing monkey? If his attacks come to nothing is it worth the dazzling footwork?

Haaland won’t decide to leave because Cherki doesn’t pass to him. He’s 22, he will improve

He was 22 when we signed him. Hes a maverick type. We need that cockiness. At no point has he been disruptive in his short career. Your dislike of him is bizarre and I suggest there’s other motives for it. Anyhoo enjoy your day.

Dancing monkey?

All players fuck up opportunities, they learn and choose the better option next time. Cherki is still young, learning his teammates’ moves. Plus every team needs that one unpredictable skillful maverick. If we don’t always know what he’ll do, the defenders certainly won’t.

More times than not though, he creates good chances. What we need is a midfielder running through to smash them in, or our attackers (Haaland aside) to improve their finishing.

It would appear that the OP's dislike of Cherki is slightly more nuanced than subjective regarding his ability and judgement.

I'm going to file it in the "childish twat" box.

Mate seriously what the fuck are you on about? Posts rarely make me wince, but this one did Jesus Christ. How old are you? 15?

Jeez, RobH has some sort of axe to grind.

Incredibly skillful, first season in the team which has proven difficult under Pep for many players but he has acquitted himself very well. Hope Maresca allows him and Phil to express themselves and doesn't put them in straight jackets.

I know everyone’s entitled to an opinion but you abuse it with the shite posted here.

Why the fuck would Haaland want to leave because the top assister in our side didn’t pass him the ball on one occasion?

You’re right, a pattern of behavior means nothing.

15 year olds think the game henges on goals and assists. The mature view is that it takes teamwork to win titles. All of my criticism here is based on his ability to play with the team. “He’s a maverick” is a nice way of saying he’s not a team player and doesn’t listen to the manager.

I’ve said my piece. Time will tell. And I do hope he comes good and settles in.

It's already been said, but he is young and will learn. Don't think we should write him off as someone that will cause trouble because of a couple of instances that he has not made the correct pass (every player does that) and a dodgy article with minimal credibility, let alone any reputable sources. Even if the story was true, he was a kid and will change.

He wouldn’t have as many starts as he did this season in big games if he didn’t listen to the manager.

I can’t believe what one poster is posting in this thread. Based on what?
We have a supremely talented, young footballer, who is not yet the finished article but could become one of the best in the world and this guy is throwing around weird theories. I am honestly starting to think that some of our “fanbase” now nothing about football, are only happy if they are whinging or have been spoiled beyond belief and are becoming very ragish

Any accusations of immaturity really don't worry me right now. He's 22 and just got a move to a UCL contender. I lived through Balotelli, this is nothing.

Pep seemed to like him and he appears happy. There are plenty of veteran presences within the club that he can benefit from.
