100 Years Ago - Start of WW1

I'm in Mons, staying in a hostel 50m from Grand Place (the main square).

I walked into the square this afternoon and there were Union Flags hanging from every building. A Belgian family shared my table, and they refused to let me buy a drink. "We are so happy we could share tonight with an Englishman" they said.

Seeing the reaction of the locals to William and Kate was moving. To my country celebrated like that was amazing.

Belgium: A truly grateful and honourable nation.

Are you there Weds night?

There will hardly be a family in this country that was not touched by that war, several family members of mine all came back, some were OK, one took to drink and became a recluse prior to the war he had been an outgoing pretty ordinary guy so I am told

Although it was a terrible war, a lot of good came out of it in terms of the condition of the working class, although that's another debate

My Grandfather who was "blown to bits" 3 months before my father, his only son, was born. Every time I read those words "blown to bits" I get emotional.

One of the proudest moments of my life came when I was asked to take part in laying a wreath at the menin gate while the last post was playing

These people made the ultimate sacrifice.

Lest we forget. RIP

I'm not usually 1 for this, but I stopped watching Sky go at 2158.
Out of 8 candles mrs TTT lit,about 1730 btw,there was 1 still burning,still is.
I walked out to the front door with my glass of vino, and said "thanks".
My dad (God Bless) was born in 1930, he was evacuated from Glasgow to Dunning near Perth when WW2 started.
Lest we forget eh.
