When Chop leaves me (it will destroy me) if i feel i want another family member of the four legged variety i want a Tosa.
How is your Corso, needs a constant firm hand or ?
Never mind a Tosa, you need a Winky.

lololol, winky's dog xD
Cat's everywhere still raise an eyebrow when that name is mentioned.
They use American Bulldogs and Dogue De Bordeaux to hunt wild boar in the sticks in France, they use others but you will have seen some cross as others mentioned. It will have been a local crossbreed bred specifically for jobs in that area most likely as the French are very proud of their dogs and they keep strict bloodlines.
When i say strict i don't mean to what silly sods like crufts would call strict, they breed for the best traits, silent pads, track silently when commanded etc.
So chances are you were near large areas of wooded land or one of the farmers who use these dogs sold a pup to someone from a litter he had.
I say that due to the obvious logic that boar hunting requires strong jaws (from trackers and holders) to grip it before they send in the Johnson American Bulldogs (they grip it proper before their master dispatches the quarry).
That and that is where my boy originated (boar hunting dog), he is my best mate and listens to my command above anything. He does not need it though unless you are a cat shitting in his garden.
On topic again... yeah these dogs can be beyond "giant" in some places and France is one of the sources of these dogs. The father of my dog was 100% johnson (short muzzle, huge neck and chest) from a boar hunting line from France.
Offer him a cuddle and he will love you forever, raise a hand to me and he will certainly ruin your weekend. I think this rule applies to many dogs but very much so for the type of breed you encountered.
Sorry for the long reply but i felt you were looking for something more that "aliens" :-)
They need loads of socialisation because they are protective of their property and family members, get them used to cats, kids, lots of people, cars, all noises because they can be quite suspicious of things. They need to know who's boss also, When I first got him at 10 weeks I tried to pick him up and he growled and snapped at me so I had to be firm and hold him down until he quit resisting me, over the next week he did it a couple more times so I had to do it again so he knew I was in charge.Never show fear with any puppy or they will rule your house. He gets so much love from us all which reinforces his love for us but he has to know the rules though and what is and isn't allowed and usually a loud No and stern eye contact usually does the job, occasionally he will go overboard when play fighting with my other dog so I will have to push him away and make eye contact so he knows he's gone too far. At first though they still feel like they are with their litter mates so they treat you as you are one of them, they quickly learn you are not one though. When Chop leaves me (it will destroy me) if i feel i want another family member of the four legged variety i want a Tosa.

Would it not be easier buying a hamster. They need loads of socialisation because they are protective of their property and family members, get them used to cats, kids, lots of people, cars, all noises because they can be quite suspicious of things. I did about 10 years research before I got one and then I went to a breeder who had carefully planned every aspect of the breeding. Good quality parents so I knew I was getting a good solid dog with a great temperament.
Puppy classes are essential really.
One more thing. They can be fearful of things like noises, or anything new but you have to be very confident and reassuring around them. and they must have a crate/cage to sleep in at night or when you're out.
