Ake isn't a threat,he's a decent back up,but he's not in Eric's league.

Him and Dias will work out just lovely once they find each others game.

Exactly - he’s basically been signed to fill a homegrown spot until better players become available, and will probably be used as a makeweight next summer unless he manages to establish himself at leftback.

Laporte and Dias has all the elements to become an elite partnership for the majority of the next decade.

Aké has been signed because our season went off the rails without Laporte last year. We needed a left-sided central defender to prevent that happening again and paid the price

Was he called up to France? Look like he was not, I dont mine really. They have quite a choice of selection for CB position btw.
Top CB duos could be created even from the French CB's who dont make the national squad.

I'm surprised spain haven't gone overboard in wooing Laporte. Garcia is playing for them tonight and he is no Laporte. For whatever reason he does not look like getting a start with France at the moment

Hope he can develop aggressivity and positioning alongside Dias. At the moment it is more passing than defending what makes him first 11.

We need him in there. Perhaps play him against Sheffield United then rest him for Olympiakos?

Obviously still rusty and looking for form, but so much more assured and stronger than Garcia.

The partnership looks incredibly promising.

Ruben Dias is great but Laporte is just perfect

Like Pep says - best left footed defender in the world

I'm honestly not sure who is better right now - Dias or Laporte - both are playing well and as a partnership - at least right now - we've the best CB pairing in the league (and possibly in world football).

I'll caveat this with it's still a little bit early to anoint Dias as "world class" - I was fooled by Mangala when he joined our side - I never, ever saw such a dominant CB display as Mangala in his first game with us - it went rapidly downhill from there.

I'd say Laporte has more strings in his bow; he's more likely to pull some world class piece of defending out.

For me I haven't seen anything about Dias that screams outstanding defensively, but I have seen a lot that says reliable. Extremely reliable in fact. You almost never feel like he's going to get caught sleeping or turned easily or something of that ilk.

And in this era, competence and reliability are rarer and more valuable than ever in defence.

Dias also seems to be a big-time leader figure.

I think Dias will prove to be incredibly valuable and possibly become our most important player, at least defensively, for his leadership and consistency. But I do think Laporte is "better" if you will.

Well said,. Laportes game is so good that he doesn't need a person ality.

I would give Laporte a little rest If possible
he is a tremendous player and I think we need to protect and rest him until he is fully fit and get him to a position where he can play 50 games a season
great great player and him and Dias can be a real strong bedrock for us to get back to winning trophies

Yeah I agree, play Ake on Tuesday instead of him (or even John) and let Eric rest-up till Sunday.

Based on our recent form I have to ask, did Laporte getting injured as well as not having a 2nd reliable CB single handedly derail our season last year? With all our other major issues being as a result of this? Previously I would have thought to pinpoint it down to just this would be far-fetched but since Laporte came back from injury just prior to the restart and us signing Dias and Aké we've been rather good on the goals conceded front.

I mean even still we haven't had the best results this season, but if we had a defence similar to this season last season when we were better going forwards you'd have to think A LOT of those silly dropped points wouldn't have happened.

Laporte's injury hurt us a lot - but we were weak at LB too and we lacked (and still do lack) a destroyer at mid (Fernandinho had to play CB quite a bit last year so we didn't have a midfield destroyer ahead of us).

This year: our 433 backline of Someone - Laport + Dias + Walker is far better than we had last year. Still need a LB and a ball-winning destroyer at mid though.

I mean, my point is that even though we may have issues at LB and DM (I disagree on that but that's another discussion), the only actual relevant part is the CBs.

We had no LB for much of 17-19, and in both seasons there were spells we didn't have Fernandinho. But we were fine. In fact we won a shit ton, even with Zinchenko at LB.

Last season, everything went to shit without Laporte. It exaggerated all of our other issues: LB, Silva + Aguero ageing, Fernandinho in defence, weakening press etc. But firstly, we were actually looking really strong in the games prior to Laporte's injury, and secondly we looked vastly improved after he came back. We still had some issues as Laporte couldn't do it all but a lot of problems were lessened just by having him back.

Now we have him, Dias, Aké, and hopefully Stones. Since Dias came in and Laporte recovered from coronavirus so many of our defensive issues have lessened massively from last season, or even the start of this season. Yet we still have Mendy injured, we're still using makeshift LBs, we're still not using Fernandinho in midfield etc. But for the first time in ages we look strong at the back. Like really good too. We're barely conceding chances or goals consistently for what feels like forever.

Kind of like how we've had a few issues attacking this season due to having no forwards, we struggled last season due to having no (reliable) CBs.
