14 | Nico Gonzalez - 2025/26

Wasn't what I said, I said we found something that worked and stuck to it, I never said Gonzalez staying on the bench was the reason. Different things, can both be right not everything is black and white.
I agree. We may have been worse with Nico, or the same, or better. I don't believe he didn't play because Pep believed he would compromise our chances for top 4/5. I'm convinced he did something to get on the wrong side of Pep not related to his performance. He wouldn't be the first.
None of this has diddley to do with Pep's resume as a coach. Everyone, no matter how good or successful they are in what they do, has some idiosyncrasies...

Was it because we had to win games at that stage of the season and the team that was playing was getting the points on the board to finish top 3 and nearly chase down arsenal. Could be.

This is just stating the obvious. Pep will player whoever is best at delivering. He clearly does not believe Gonzalez was good enough. To add more he clearly doesn’t think he is good enough now judging by the CWC.

I wouldn’t be judging anything by the CWC, it played its purpose. But jumping to any conclusions about Peps thoughts for next season would be a mistake. Obviously he isn’t starting ahead of Rodri and Reijnders, but he will play plenty and will be their main back up.

A la masia graduate with neat hair, tight control and a lack of pace seems like the sort of player pep would crawl through broken glass to sanction to be fair
I dont know how we could possibly get it wrong with this guy, his father worked at the club for a couple of years, pep knows him and the family really well and has been aware of his ability since he was a child. We had other opportunities to sign him for far less but never took them so when we spend 50m on him it should be as sure a thing as you can ever find in football. I am baffled by this and even more baffled that he actually looked quite good when he played too. Had more good games in his first 3 games than phillips has in his entire time here. He was immense against newcastle at home.

Honestly I think it'll blow over he'll stay and be a very good squad player for us. Just obviously while we struggle to cut the squad down the club will have to explore the odd left field option of who could make room.

Be shocked if hes not here in September.

Fair enough and you are right I am not Pep and can tell his thoughts. However, I am just voicing an opinion regarding that if Pep doesn’t play a player they are not good enough currently. He might get better but he isn’t a kid like Palmer was.

He’s a 6 though and for a while Pep wasn’t sure Rodri was going to get it,and was getting frustrated with him.It was Lilo that took him aside and worked with him till he finally understood it. Nico has had half a season.

Time to call Lillo back to work his magic.

Kevs gone. Gundo, Kova and Bernie will all be gone by next summer at the latest.

I’ve seen nothing to suggest Nico isn’t good enough to play for us so don’t quite get some here saying he’s a ‘waste of money’ and slagging off the recruitment team?

IMO he was absolutely fine when called upon after signing. Maybe looked a little nervy, weak at times and not used to playing as a lone DM, but nowhere near as bad as Kalvin Phillips or Nunes as midfield signings. He’s young with plenty of time to improve and acclimatise to us/the league too.

He deserves at least another season to grow with us and I’ll be pretty pissed if he’s one that makes way this summer. Don’t think he will fwiw. If he does it’ll probably go down as one of, if not the most pointless signings in recent years

My opinion, not that’s it’s worth anything is that he looks a very decent player. A midfield three of him Rodri and reinders would be very solid and stop us being countered on as much.

I hope he comes through and proves to be a wonderful player.

If and a big if, but if he is sold this window it could have ramifications for future transfer targets down the line.
I like the look of him and think he could be what the midfield is looking for.

He's a top lad, he lives next door to my cousin in Failsworth, think he lacks a bit of self belief but theres a quality player in there.

I don't know if someone has noticed yet, but the main problem and issue I have with this player is that he never makes those quarterback (long ball) passes and always tries to play ground pass / low pass and that's something holding midfielder should do like even with eyes closed.

Ground pass / low pass means that you can't switch sides quicker and therefore as I understand that's the main issue Pep has with this player.

Unfortunately Kalvin Phillips was great at that but he lacked other things.

So the question is: can this skill be taught, can he somehow start giving more and more precise long balls ? If it's easy to learn, then I see a player in him, but if not, then as a holding midfielder he isn't good enough.

What point are you trying to make? Be succinct.

It would be but the problem is b silva will play every game as he is now captain which is a big mistake as he is no longer the player he was and gundo will play before Nico as he will not be going anywhere .
