14 | Nico Gonzalez - 2025/26

Madrid, Barca and Munich weren't after Rodri at 23 either. We were pretty much unopposed when we signed him.

Phenomenal scouting from Txiki and the board, really. He'd done well at Villarreal and Atletico but not tearing up trees.

Perhaps we were lucky that the position wasn't as fashionable yet as it has become in recent years. The '6' is now arguably the most important position in football (IMO anyway).

He was that, but he came to us injured and took a few years to really get cooking here. While you're weighing in what's your opinion on my points regarding Ake and Akanji?
Agree with them. We can't have a squad of superstars, sometimes you need an Akanji. And you need to take a punt on players becoming decent, and for every Fernandinho you'll have a Fernando.

Gonzalez hasnt got the legs and speed of Fernandinho or the nouse and passing range of Rodri.

He's a decent top 5 team player.

If he went up for sale tomorrow I doubt Real Madrid, Barca or Munich will be battering the door down for him.
Madrid signed Alexander-Arnold, Jovic, Ceballos, Barça signed Rashford, Adama Traore, Erc Garcia, Bayern signed Eric Dier, Mazroui, Pavard, Liverpool signed Nunez and over the years made Jordan Henderson their PL+CL winning captain… there are lots of players these clubs buy that I wouldn’t want City signing.

I like his attitude and I like him. Is he as good as Rodri, not now, no. Could he unlikely. Time will tell. Is he our best option right now when Rodri isn't available? I'd say so because he has more positional discipline than Kovacic but I'd like to see both play when Rodders is out.

Keeps improving. Reading of the game is getting better. His positioning to intercept out balls and keep the pressure on is really good.
