Ahead of the first line of opposition attackers not wandering upfront, and that’s exactly his role in possession, it’s not to sit in as the third centre back making a back 5 to pass side to side with 11 men infront of them. Fernandinho drifts into the pocket and receives the ball in advance of the opposition strikers where he can force their midfielders to confront him which starts everything off and makes the space.

I agree the lack of movement upfront is concerning but that’s a separate problem for another thread.

Rodri also receives the ball in advance of the opposition strikers.

And today we were basically playing a 343 in possession so it is Rodri's job to sometimes drop into the back line between the centre backs.

I just don't see an issue with his positioning to get on the ball, he makes plenty of passes so I just can't see how he is hiding from the ball.

I’d suggest you didn’t watch Rodri closely enough or at all if you don’t see a huge huge problem with him.

How can the front three do anything when we can’t get the ball to them? They’re entire involvement is receiving the ball back to goal with two defenders around them and passing it back to where it came from because we cannot build play, move opponents around and start creating space for them to operate in. Why can’t we do that? Rodri.

The guy refuses to open himself up for a pass unless he’s alongside the back 4 which makes him literally pointless in the build up as the opposition aren’t even pressing our defenders. we need him to receive the ball ahead of their front line so he can invite the midfield on to him which then opens up spaces for our forward midfielders or wingers to move into vacated space and receive the ball, then they can turn and create chances from there, that’s how all of our play for the last 4 years has started. We’ve not seen any of that all season because Rodri has regressed further from an already mediocre at best level and opposition know if you cut out the ball to Rodri who will help by standing himself right behind a player then we cannot create anything.

It’s such a school yard view to say we’re not scoring enough, it must be the forwards fault, just like blaming the defence for every goal we concede when they’re left ruthlessly exposed is stupid, which again has Rodri at the heart of the problem.

Go back and listen to Jamie Vardy’s post match interview when they battered us, he even admitted their plan was to stop Rodri getting on the ball they just probably didn’t expect Rodri to help them do that so easily.

He’s shit, not fit for purpose in any way, his best attributes are his physicality/aerial ability which might have been useful 5 years ago when every team thought the way to get at us was to rough us up and play high balls but there’s nobody in the league that does that anymore other than Burnley and it’s no surprise Rodri’s best games come against them. and then his second best attribute is his shooting ability which is redundant as a holding midfielder and doesn’t say much about the qualities we need him to have.

I’m not a huge Declan Rice fan, I think he’s competent but not much more yet he looked 3-4 levels above Rodri today in a much poorer side.
"we need him to receive the ball ahead of their front line", do you not think that their "front line" sitting half way inside their own half, side by side with their midfield, is part of the reason there is a lack of space, so much so that our centre backs can carry the ball deep into our opponents half before facing a challenge. Apparently not or you would not have misinterpreted Vardy's comment.

Underwhelming. Can't believe that him & Cancelo were our marquee signings last season. He either passes it sideways or backwards with a maximum passing range of about 5 yards, or seems to have stupid long shots from outside the box which go nowhere near the goal.
If you didn't see Rodri make a forward pass or pass more than 5 yards the fault is with your screen, get one where you can clearly see the players and enjoy the football and you won't need to make such obviously false OTT claims.

The coverage Dinho is able to give (reflected by Gundogan's static positioning today too) is just something we sorely miss, Rodri is sitting higher up the pitch in position but we don't have the coverage behind and particularly today, it's being able to get back 20/30 yards whilst the counter ball is in the air and be on the attacker/CB duel to either double up on the 2nd ball, take the attacking runner for the flick on or sweep in and pick the loose ball up which we sorely lack with Rodri over Dinho and West Ham exploited it time and time again today.

This is just a lie.

Rodri made 108 passes, the second most in the team behind Gundogan's 110.

If you want to criticise the way he uses the ball then fine but inventing that he hides from the ball is not needed, it takes away any actual points your post may have when it starts with a complete fabrication.
How many passes he did make in the first half?

He was a lot more involved in the second half but I put that down to West Ham sitting back.

Lovely images but "Fernandinho in the same game 2 & 3 seasons ago:" means absolutely nothing in the context of comparison of like with like. 3 different games, different sets of players, there is no such thing as "same game" and all the technology in the world won't change that, it is not fantasy football.

2 clearly different ways of playing that role. One works, one doesn't, as seen today. If we'd played our strongest available team with a better balance the scorelines in all 3 games would have ended up the same given how vulnerable West Ham were to the rare moments we got into positions.
