He didn’t improve on Gundogan as a 6 and he certainly didn’t improve on Fernandinho as a 6. If he was on the market now we’d (hopefully) be nowhere near him.

He’s an average player and thus a poor signing in a front foot side like ours because he never breaks the lines with his passing, gives no tempo to our play and is often caught the wrong side and can’t get back.

Like too many of our big money, recent signings, he didn’t make the first eleven better.

Strolled? He was sprinting full speed.

And Rodri did fine, he was initially tracking their striker then moved to Luis and sent him wide where Cancelo should have got tight to block the shot but instead stood square and put his hands behind his back.

The only possible blame is to Dias for the shit give away and Cancelo for giving too much space to shoot but I would just give credit to Luis for a great goal just as I would for Antonio's today.
If you can’t possibly ascribe any of the blame to Rodri for Luiz’s goal, I can only assume you are: (a) Rodri, (b) a close relation or (c) Pep.

Agree to disagree.

All I will say is if Fernandinho did exactly the same thing not a word would be said.

...because Fernandinho has been brilliant for years for the club. An absolutely rolls royce of a player in midfield.

Rodri is too slow and plays in a way that makes us toothless from midfield and doesn't protect the back four.

He should never have been bought as he wasn't what we needed.

That is irrelevant.

Because Fernandinho has been brilliant for us doesn't effect whether a piece of defending is good or bad.

You are sort of proving my point, because people dislike Rodri they are saying he should have done better on that goal. If Fernandinho did the same thing nothing would be said because those same posters love him. The defending is either good or bad, you can't change your opinion based on which player does it.

Jesus gets a lot of the same treatment, people dislike him purely because he isn't Aguero.

He does make more passes than anyone else!

This season in the league his average number of passes is 83.4, the next midfielder is Gundogan on 65 then Kevin on 51.

I feel like people dislike him and are trying to justify it anyway they can. Largely it was he is slow and can't defend but his defending has been good the last few games so that has disappeared and now his passing/positioning is the new go to criticism.

It doesn't seem to be based in any fact.
It’s based on an understanding of football mate. Stats tell you a small part of the story. Go watch a recording of one of our games when Fernandinho was at the top of his game. Then watch todays or Wednesdays. Then tell me he is what we need.

Well Fernandinho's best asset was probably his athleticism in transition both stopping counters and breaking forward when we win it.

We didn't need any of that either today or against Porto so I don't see the issue with Rodri.

If we had been getting rinsed on the counter I would understand but honestly I can't remember a single counter attack chance other than Porto's goal.
