I’d love to have access to his scouting reports to see what they thought it strengths were. I guess the main problem is we’ve been spoilt since 2013 with one of City’s finest ever players playing in that position. Cumbersome is a great word to sum him up as one of the previous posters said.

i would back moving Laporte into that position if he stays and giving him a chance there. At least he’d offer defensive strength.

I don’t know if it’s Rodri (the player) or the role Pep’s asking him to play in the side. He clearly isn’t being asked to play the same role as Fern (because that doesn’t suit his attributes). But I honestly think if you put him in that role at, say, Blackburn Rovers, he wouldn’t fundamentally alter their success.

Maybe he’s not supposed to and it’s all part of the system, but I was fine with the system we had with Fern. We tried this before with Fernando, Javi Garcia and a few others and it never stuck. It’s an position continental managers seem to instinctively like: Pellegrini tried it, Pep did, Arteta seems to like it, and it might work in Spain but don’t think it suits the English game tbh

Javi Garcia player 29 times in the league when we won the premier league 2013/14. Surely that means he’s fantastic?

He’s still not the answer to the question of who replaces Fernandinho.
He was more athletic when he came on but again all too often his pass at the end of it is misplaced

I like him, but the total lack of awareness to spot Fernandinho free, to then play a stupid backwards pass to Ake is concerning. He even had Ake and Dias pointing to Fernandinho but he still passes it back. Shocking really.

Clearly Pep hardly set eyes on him before he rocked up. He obviously gives Txiki a shopping list and trusts him to source what he feels the team needs. I think it's fair to say Txiki has a blind spot when it comes to signing players from the Iberian peninsula.

I think we know why and it won't change. He could do the quad and I don't think it would change; especially if he did it in a season where he lost both league games to the Rags.

Javi Garcia kept Fern out of the side in the run-in to winning the title if IIRC.

Garcia was a fine example of how blinkered some people are when it comes to football. Javi was a different kind of DM to Fern, or that Fern: he couldn't hare about the park so his game was based on marking space.
