Ederson and 1v1s is a mixed bag. He can be really good at coming out and stopping them before it happens but if it’s not clear cut and the attacker gets on the ball…it’s a goal 9/10 times.
A goalkeeping analyst/coach broke it down really well about 3/4 years ago - he comes out too fast and makes the forwards mind up. Keepers who are good at 1v1s come out a bit, then stop so the attacker has to make the choice between going round or finishing past the keeper. Coming out a bit immediately puts pressure on the forward, but stopping keeps both options possible and it’s that indecision that slows things down, makes the forward take extra touches and lets the keeper either make a save or come out more and grab the ball after a bad touch. Keepers who stay rooted on their line have the same problem, the player immediately knows going around isn’t an option and just focuses on the finish.
Once you’ve seen it, almost every 1v1 with Ederson plays out the same way - it’s insane to me that no one at City has tried to fix this issue in the 8 years Ederson has been here.
To be honest I really don’t rate Xabi Mancisidor at all as a gk coach. He oversaw Casillas’ massive drop off in form at Real in 2010/11, Hart’s big drop off just before Pep arrived and IMO is a big reason Ederson’s no better a keeper than when he arrived from Benfica. I know fuck all about elite goalkeeping coaching but there’s a pattern.
I remember Brummie GK coach that’s occasionally on the guardian pod talking about how Mancinis GK coach always made Hart work on his weaknesses and the things he hated working on, and those were his best years. Mancisidor arrived and just let Hart work on what he wanted, which left the weak parts of his game unaddressed and they got worse and worse.
I think about that a lot when Ederson faces yet another penalty and gets nowhere near it. Keepers should save on average 1 in 5 pens, Edersons not saved one since 2021, 15+ attempts. It’s undeniably a weakness in his game and it’s not improved at all in the 8 years he’s been here.
