1966 — Was it over the line? Part II

Re: 1966 — Was it over the line? Part II

the 1966 and 1970 world cups are much more popular in germany than e.g. the finals in 82 and 86. That´s why this goal/no goal is still very much alive in our memory

Nobody can now be certain, given the relatively poor TV coverage of the time, but a critical point for me is Hunt wheeling away in celebration when he could easily have tapped it in to "make sure".

What is certain is that it was given, just as Germany's "penalty" was given in the Italia 90 final, or Maradonna's "Hand of God" goal; and they were far more obviously poor decisions.

But for me, Hunt's decision, as a great goal poacher himself, not to tap it in is critical evidence on the "yes" side.

There was nothing wrong with the coverage, 25,000 people behind the goal, did not need extra angles and andy grays penis extension, to state whether it was a goal or not, the referee's decision is final.

Just as Schumacher's challenge on Battiston in 82 was perfectly legitimate, if Schumacher had been sent off we would not have been deprived of an appalling World Cup Final between Italy and France.

West Germany v Austria played an extremely entertaining game in the same World Cup, and similarly did not contrive the most boring stalemate in World football history, the edited highlights did not do that game justice IMO. Good riddance to Algeria I say.

Germany also did not rob us due to a suspect refereeing decision when, Hurst was clearly impeding play with his head in the 1970 World cup quarter-final.

Check it out on youtube, Hurst was clearly impeding with play by being on the pitch.

Bayern Munich in 75 won legitimately against a piss poor Leeds United also in the European Cup Final. Lorimer was clearly offside from 35 yards out, when he hit that volleyed rocket. (I hate leeds by the way)

West Germany were also unfortunate in being the only team to win the World Cup by losing a group game before becoming World Champions, once in 54, before that cheating arsehole Puskas had the temerity, by putting the ball in the net in the last minute, thereby almost depriving the western world of post second world war recovery. the 7-1 group victory by Hungary was obviously a fluke.

Also losing to East Germany in 74 was a massive miscarriage of justice also. Sparswasser? what sort of a name is that? Germany rewarded the man by making him a rodent operative when he defected to the west., prior to his sparkling career as a PE teacher.

Winning important games in Europe by the toss of a coin, and continuing to win these games when they the coin was replaced by penalties.

Bring back the toss of the coin, a far farer way of deciding closely fought games.

Not sure. The main things I remember from the 66 World Cup are Pickles the dog finding the stolen trophy and all the boys at my school, including me, covering our jumpers with the World Cup Willie badges that came free with 3d bars of World Cup nougat.

Poor Pickles what a waste of time that was, he found the ruddy thing, gave it to the Brazilians and they melted it down to pay off the national debt. Pickles died a bitter twisted drunk all he got was a lifetime supply of Old Jamaicae, his favourite chocolate bar (Dog biscuits were scarce as the Germans ate them all during the war), and his owner was shot by a Columbian drug baron.

If you don't believe me youngsters look it up on Wikipedia

Re: 1966 — Was it over the line? Part II

No. And I repeat. Hunt could have put the bloody ball over the line and scotched this whole bit of history.

Anyway, what I do remember about the game most of all is the West German equaliser. It was more than my brain could stand, I burst into tears, ran upstairs, slammed the door, and sobbed my heart out on my bed, face down. My grandmother, bless her, came into my world and calmed me sufficiently so that I went downstairs and watched the rest of the game.

At school, on the Monday, the teacher asked us about the game, and we were all in uproar about the biased referee giving the West Germans their freekick that led to their equaliser. Maybe we had all stormed upstairs at that moment, I don't know, but none of us mentioned 'the goal'.

After the game, I went outside and kicked a ball about in the garden.

I was 8 at the time.
