1970's MCFC

Loved the 70s remember one Friday night late on getting the coach run by the City lads to Ipswich for the Saturday game, long time ago don't remember many names Lee Tate was on and after the match we piled back on the coach and ended up in pubs and finished off in some club in Felexstowe, fun and games that night police vans and cars with the blue lights flashing escorted us out of town and the county, happy days.

Les Tate ;)

I got whacked across the back of the legs by a copper with a signalling stick outside Bolton train station before the League Cup game in 1971,when we got beat 3-0.
I was only watching all the scrapping going on as well.
At the final whistle we piled from the r/h side of the Lever End. I kicked in the front door panel of a parked Jag. Dark Brown leather sole 'Oxford's' I've never been at ease with that action. Long time ago mind.

My thought process was that Ron was only at City for a season or two, but that Paul stayed a while longer.
But it was over 40 years ago,so I may well be wrong.
I remember watching them play for Luton (?) against us before they joined in a 2nd replay of a cup game at old trafford. Had a piss on the back wall of the stretford end that night. Happy days.

Never forget League cup semi in 76 the atmosphere on the Kippax was the best I can ever remember. One down from the first , two up at half time, just got back in with a couple of pints after half time when we scored again, beer went everywhere whole place going f**king mental. Whatever we achieve now don't think we'll ever top the feeling of that four nil win over Boro. Mind you then I was young and crazy now I am old and dull, think my generation had the best of it.
I remember staying behind in the Kippax for about 30 mins singing after that game. One of the great atmospheres I ever experienced.

Perspective. Last Saturday we were 2-0 up, the Arse were on their arses down to 10. We were playing other world football. Suddenly a huge section of our support thought, What this match really needs is an over priced shit drink in an edible cup.
Only posties needed refreshments that badly in our day. But they never even saw the turf.

My fondest memories of following home and away were the 70's.

The old Kippax, the kit/scarf colours, transit vans and specials. Dog shit alley, windy corner, stinking bogs, infiltrating the away section and escorts, waiting at Piccadilly or the Brunswick.
All the old characters.

As I get older I find myself thinking about them a lot (blue tinted specs) Big fat football hooligan, Trumans for steel, Freddie Pye, all the boozers.

Loads of youtube vids of matches I'm watching from then.

Brilliant memories, how about playing great attacking football on pitches like that, I went to Maine road from 67 to 74 and never realised how bad the pitch could be compared to modern day Etihad, we were still treated to champagne football( funny to see Francis Lee playing against us, Tueart so underated

One game that sticks in my mind for all sorts of reasons, is the 1-0 victory over Sunderland in 76-77.

This was the first game that I ever attended without parental supervision, and 47,000+ must have been one of the largest evening kick-off attendances for a League match in the 70s.

We were sat in the Platt Lane (both of us 12 years old) surrounded by hordes of Sunderland fans.

I seem to recall that Sunderland had been stranded at the foot of the table, before a run of unexpected victories had offered a lifeline. They were ultimately relegated due to Bristol City and Coventry drawing in controversial circumstances (as in Germany-Austria at the 82 World Cup)

You've just picked the very first game I attended. My Dad took me and I was totally taken in by the whole experience....never looked back. Also, a cracking game which we won.

Weirdly can't really remember league cup semi against Plymouth can remember it was 3 1 and the atmosphere seemed flat. That's all I can remember and I was there strangest of all can't remember if it was at night or in the afternoon like the Coventry quarter which I remember like it was yesterday. Can anyone fill in the blanks please.

It was at night, City hired a generator that was situated behind the North Stand. The match was 2-0 to City, 3-1 on aggregate.

Sunderland have still got an ongoing rivalry and hatred of Coventry over that
