1989 home shirt

The 1990 released Maroon shirt was the first one I saw without the cheaper option of no sponsor. You do get the odd anomaly though as sports direct were selling 2011/12 goalie shirts with no sponsor in 2013.

I avoid em like the plague. Proud to say I have never bought anything made by them. I’m pretty daft when it comes to sponsors, I bought a rubbishy old Saab once from a backstreet garage just cos of City

Same, never used any of their sponsors goods. Have never bought anything of that crap colour of theirs either.

Remember boro coming to Maine Road once and the game was gonna be shown on MOTD. No -one told boro they arrived with sponsors on their shirts which was a big no no in them days
Thus they turned up on the pitch wearing Rag strips !!! Poss 86 ish ?
Bet Gary James will know exactly when

Likely to be the last time we played then in Div 1 which would have been 1981/82. The last game the sponsor ban applied to in England was Brighton FA cup final in 83 I think.

Just googled it 1981 bloody hell my memory is good got the year so wrong

“But few are as strange as the time when Boro lined up against the Manchester club in the shirts of their cross-city rivals United.
It was a Division One game played in 1981, with Boro planning to wear Datsun Cleveland-sponsored red shirts.
But due to the live game being switched to Maine Road, the Boro kitman was sent to Old Trafford to garner a set of strips for Boro to play in!
This was during the early days of shirt sponsorship, when televised games were not allowed to bear such advertising.
Despite goals from Tony McAndrew and David Hodgson, City would run out 3-2 winners.”

back in the day a lot of the retros came with no sponsors. A lot of that 89-91 shirts with sponsors on now are when umbro rereleased it about 10 years ago.

I recently bought the home shirt from 87-89 and the away from 88-90 ( purple and white stripes ). Spent a fortune as I wanted them badly as they were my first ever City shirt as a kid. Neither have the sponsor on them. Still look great though

You could get them with the sponsor on at the time - i used to buy shirts mail order from the club shop (my bday presie each year) and would choose "Home shirt, with "Brother" on" as the choice - that was exactly how the bit of paper city would send out as the "merchandise sheet" listed it, they had it with or without, you paid more for with as they would print it on.

You can tell the retro replicas of recent years as they don't have the umbro badge in most cases, the ones the shop sell dont, but as you say umbro did a limited rerelease a few years back so there's a mix. Mine are original, i have bad 80s/90s photos to prove it ;)

I proudly squeezed into my 91 original for last years cup final (my 89 wouldn't fit alas). My 86 from city had the proper felt type Philips, it was the first 3 home brother ones you had to pay extra for. But you could get them, from city, it's just looking at footage many people couldn't be arsed!

I bought a red jacket in the Boxing Day sales last year because it was the only colour in my size and I needed one. I can’t bring myself to wear it, and my wife took the piss. It’s in the boot now as my ‘emergency’ coat.
