1999 play off final - 21 years ago today!

The only "final" I went to with my dad, who had already started having heart trouble by then.

When Dickov's goal went in, I turned to celebrate with him but he looked in trouble and like he could faint, at which point he snatched a cup of Coke from the little lad in front of us and gulped it down in one and the sugar rush seemed to bring him around. On the bizarrely quiet train home, we were talking about it and I suggested that it had looked like he was having a heart attack and I thought we might "lose" him, to which he replied "aye lad but what a bloody way to go"!

I don't understand how people left the ground at 2-0. I don't mean through any noble and valiant support your team till the end type reasons I just mean physically, how did they have the energy to get up and walk. I remember sitting there staring across at the celebrating Gillingham fans and I was just numb. I wasn't angry or sad, I was just spent!

I stayed till the end cos i was numb and couldn't be arsed doing anything.

To be honest i was on a small coach and had no idea what the plan was to get back on it so i wasn't going anywhere.

Re posting this from a couple of years ago for those who missed it.

Living in Maidstone and working in Gillingham I realised the only way of seeing this was to get tickets in the Gills end. I queued up for 4 hours each on 2 separate days to get 8 tickets. A couple were for me and my boy two others for city mates the rest for mates who just wanted a day out including a Sussex F A councillor. Amazingly on the tube met two Gills fans from Manchester who had city tickets, how they had them i just dont know. So two of us swopped and got in with City Fans. The rest as they say is history.
Incidentally Gills got back to a Wembley play off in the following season and took over 50000. Wigan had about 6000 !

For our final pretty much anyone from Kent who had been to a Gillingham game could get 4 tickets, therefore grandparents, kids just about anyone who fancied a day out did so.

21 years on and they still moan about the 5 minutes injury time, always first thing mentioned. Shame :=)

what a strange day, it was taken that we would romp home on paper, drizzle all day and it never rains at wembley, the day just felt strange from when we got out of the car, when that 2nd goal went in everyone went mental the guy next to me started taking his clothes off,,,to this day i cant think why and he probably didnt know himself

The year of Utds treble, travelled with a load of Very happy Gillingham fans depressed as fuck. I remember thinking my God, is this what we have become? Guilty of walking out of Webley, emotionsctoo high, typical bloody City, very angry, when 2-0 down. The rest is history. Missed the Aguero moment and the equaliser, with very similar emotions. But what have I learnt from those moments? The United game when they beat Bayern is similar. Not over until, it's over. Lots of teams have collapsed in History, and the campaign to award the League to Liverpool rather than anull seems a peculiar idea. I know, way ahead but after this period, no one can say with any certainty that its nailed on. If and when the season resumes, it will be like a new mini season. Players coming back different to how they performed the year before.
