2 nuclear submarine collide

Just read in paper HMS vanguard which can carry 48 nuclear warheads collided with french sub. They say both have latest equipment passive sonar which enables them to go undetected. So how the fuck does anyone know where the other is. Sounds like driving blind.
 
I'm no expert on military detection systems but I'm amazed that even with passive sonar they couldn't detect each other when they're close enough to collide. Also what are the chances of two subs being in exactly the same spot at the same depth in the fucking atlantic, its hardly your local duck pond is it?

It'll be because the French Dive on the wrong side of the road.
 
Sonar is a detection system not a cloacking device. On the old sub movies you hear the "ping". This is active sonar. The sub sends out a noise and it bounces off stuff and they listen to the return. Passive sonar simply listens without transmitting a "ping". If the subs are very quiet they are hard to detect. This is good. It means they can sneak around. But of course if no one can hear you coming it's hard for them to get out of the way.

Regardless of what type of missiles they carry the subs themselves are either Nuke powered or diesel/Electric powered.

In general Diesel/Electric subs are a lot quieter than Nuke powered subs as the nukes need to keep their cooling systems running all the time and it's the noise from the various pumps and motors that can be detected.

Having said all that, this is a f*ck up by someone as both these subs were aware of each other by other means and still managed to collide.

I think statistically very very remote. Not being an expert I wold suggest that allied powers often play silly war games to justify their existence and expense. I think this was a case of try and find me! hide and seek game with nuclear subs.....that went pear shaped!
