Happy he's staying, but not sure what to make of the Captain decision. I'd have given it to Rodri.

For me, I just don't see Bernardo starting most weeks with the players we've brought in. So him starting will likely take minutes away from the younger lads who are the future of this football club. I absolutely love Bernardo, but it's a really odd choice considering the candidates were all better fits for Club captain.

We currently have 19 non Homegrown players, and if I'm right we need 17 registered? So if Bernardo isn't leaving and Gundogan isn't leaving, who is? Nunes? Kovacic? Khusanov? Nico G? Ortega? Akanji?

Even worse currently have 21. Not even counting 4 more coming back from loan.

I'd prefer Bernardo not start most games or to be sold.

But.

I will always be grateful for him amazing energy and commitment while a City player. Heart of a lion.

But.

He can do a fine job for us calmly distributing the ball in midfield but he can't be doing that just for the sake of it. It needs an end product and Pep needs to find a way to make something happen with all the possession. So if Bernardo stays I hope Pep has a better set of tactics than last year.

Pretty much exactly how I feel.

Last season there was almost zero end product from Bernardo. I cannot fault his attitude, but he just passes it for passing’s sake and is a very poor finisher for someone of his ability.

I think it's almost certain that Gundogan is leaving, he isn't even part of the 4 man captain group while being such a senior player.

This still puts us over the non HG limit for UCL, but not for Prem because of all the u21s.

I think we will just loan out some of the u21s, and/or not register them for UCL (which is the main issue, not the prem list).

Theres more than 4
I'm assuming the younger lads on loan last season like Callum Doyle, Galvez, Mbete and Wilson Esbrand will not get a route to senior team at this stage, based on our recruitment this season.
Need to just sell off or release the likes of Kayky or Kabore.

four ish that would need to be NONHG registered, the EDS mostly make the B list or Club trained which we have space on.

We all know that Bernardo has been a fantastic servant to City but making him captain is a very strange decision. His talent will never be questioned but he just cannot compete physically anymore. I would be surprised if he is in the starting eleven for the biggest games and therefore do not believe he is the right choice for captain. Hope he has a great season which will surely be his last for City.

I don’t think it’s strange that Bernardo is becoming captain. He’s been at the club the longest, if you exclude those who are leaving and the homegrown players. He didn’t back down last season — even though he’s an unc he played the third-most minutes of anyone in the squad. He covered six different positions, and he’s respected by both the players and the manager. He's Bernado Silva. He’s a City legend. He’s my Captain.

Him being captain means he plays every game hes fit

That is quite disappointing, especially with this refreshed squad

It doesn't sound like it with his latest comments. Let's say Gundogan and Bernardo aren't leaving. Who do you think would be leaving?

Or let's say Gundogan is, which other player is being sold? From the list of Kovacic, Akanji, Nunes, Nico G, Ortega and Khusanov who are most likely to leave permanently or on loan (Nico G and Khusanov's case), I don't think we can afford to let go of any of them.

Selling players like Stones, Ake, Grealish etc don't really count as they are homegrown. You may as well keep all of them for a bigger squad.

Who is going to be sacrificed to fit Bernardo into the team? Cherki? Foden? Doku? Marmoush? I don't get it.
Doesn't take a lot of working out - a game every three days coming up - all of them will be needed. There is a lamentable lack of appreciation shown on here for an unquestionably world class player still in his prime and in his eighth season as a key member of our trophy winning teams. Actually lamentable is putting it mildly.

Totally get where you're coming from, Bernardo has been a massive part of everything we’ve achieved, and I’ve got huge respect for what he’s done in a City shirt. For me though, I do think we’re starting to see signs of decline, and I’m not sure he’s as effective as he once was, but that's just my opinion and maybe I'm wrong. That doesn’t take away from his incredible contribution over the years, just think it might be time to start looking at other options more regularly, especially with us going to be playing this new faster Jürgen Klopp/Pep Ljinders style of football.

lol we will be trophyless again next season this means he is cemented in the starting 11, a new season of slow football, slow passes without any vision and creativity is coming. this is a worse moment than the day Walker extended his contract.

Slowball festival.
