20 | Bernardo Silva - 2025/26

I love him to bits, City legend. But he needs replacing or we need Rodri to return to full fitness. He can still do a job, but I thought he struggled with the physicality tonight. Ran like fuck, but he gets knocked off the ball to easily.
I think he can still do a job most of the time.

Nico G is doing well, but he’s not ballon dor Rodri. Not a knock on him at all.

Foden is brilliant but I think KDB physicality is underrated. A bit like Zidane was. Kev really put shifts in and could hold off players and hit them.

Unfortunately for Bernie it’s probably hit him as we re invent the midfield. Again no knock ok him he’s a legend.

Runs himself into the ground every week. I actually hope he makes our 500+ appearance club and gets recognition from the club.
He’s on 427 according to transfermarkt. Unfortunately I don’t see him stating after this year but wouldn’t be mad if he signed another year as long as we bought someone else in - or really went for it with Nico OR in midfield.

He’s Peps most used player ever. Should say a lot.

The mere idea of giving Bernardo a contract extension would be absurd. If, by any chance, he has any sort of role at the club next season, we’re in for another disaster like the one we had after those dreadful decisions with Walker and Gündoğan — letting completely worn-out, ageing players lead the club into a new campaign. Even the Italians have stopped doing that.

Last night you could see every Real Madrid player absolutely overpower him in duels. He genuinely gives everything, and you get the feeling he’s about to pass out on the pitch, but it’s just not enough anymore.

Right now, he’s earning more per week than Anderson, Elliott and Guehi combined. I think the money we’re paying him at City could be put to far better use — not on one player, but on several we desperately need.

As I said, we made one of our biggest mistakes ever with Walker in 2023, handing him the captain’s armband and extending his contract. Ever since then the club still hasn’t fully recovered. We really can’t afford to repeat the same mistake.

Walker was different he threatened to walk because he didn’t play in the biggest games, Akanji did. Walker did play against Madrid but everything else was barely unchanged.

Bernie has lost it, but he could still do a job as a squad player and I just said I wouldn’t be mad as long as we found a new starter.

Going back to your comparison Walker then started for us all the time and if Gundo re signed after the treble no one would have complained. But one year being Barca best player and then coming back not the same seems to go against him. Everyone was shit last year - not just Gundo. He played a lot more because the midfield was as a mess. It was always hoped Gundo would also be a squad player hence the appearance clause in his contract.

The biggest issue with Bernardo is his salary. The only player earning more than him is Haaland — and just look at Haaland’s impact compared to Bernardo’s.

That wouldn’t be a problem if he was still among the very best midfielders in the Premier League, but he isn’t. There are at least 10 midfielders in the league who would contribute more to City for less money.

The reason why we he can still do a job because he’s so intelligent. He everything right, it’s just these days he gets the ball taken from him. In his prime you couldn’t get the ball off him.

He might take a salary cut. His mentality and professionalism is something that is underestimated and very hard to replace. Look at Madrid right now, nobody who can set the tone, keep others accountable... Bernardo is an OG, winner through and through, you need this guy even if only on the bench.

Put in a shift and a half. Pep had him in a frankly insane position doing something pointless in chasing shadows (there is no way he was doing that without specific instructions to do so) he was badly needed alongside Nico in my opinion but not his fault at all that he was hardly ever in there.

The booking was crazy if he was trying to avoid a ban but is suspect it was intentional, getting a suspension out of the way next game is probably what we want and clear him for after the league phase.
I suspect he was trying to avoid freezing his tits off playing in Bodo in January

This sums it up for me.

We can see the effort, passion, work ethic, commitment etc.

But we can also see the decline. He famously had a run at Liverpool in 21/22 that had Foden actually scored, would have become an all time great highlight. He's nowhere near that player. He was at one point a top 3 or 4 dribbler in the league.

It's not far off. That first half he seemed to be tasked with leading the forward press on their GK, playing wide right, and covering in front of the defence. The net result being he seemed to be in the wrong place almost continuously
Yeah, Pep is trying to use him to plug all the gaps on the pitch. He doesn't have the legs for it anymore, which is understandable, but I'm not sure why his technical ability seems to have gone down.
