2022 World Cup Discussion

For those saying they think some of the games will be played in half empty stadiums, the Qatar FA have said that they’ve had over 40 million applications for tickets.

I’d not really given it any thought up to now but now it’s getting close, I’d love to be going. It’s going to be like no other football trip most people have ever been on before. They reckon the number of football fans there is going to be about 50% of the normal population. That would be like over 30 million fans coming over to a World Cup here.

That may mean what they want it to mean, or it may just be statistics telling us what they want us to believe. We will see soon enough I suppose.

I think people have forgotten that there’s a bunch of countries who are absolutely fanatical about football just on Qatar’s doorstep.

40m people in Saudi can drive there, 80m Turks and 100m Egyptians can get return flights for <£200.

Apparently Brazil are heavy favorites to win the WC. I'm not a fan of the current Brazil squad - I guess in no small part due to my dislike of Neymar.

Argentina are strong too - lately though, I'm not a big Messi fan.

I guess, among the favorites I'll route for England of course - but failing England, I'd like to see Belgium lift the cup.

My national team - USA - has numerous issues - and I'm not really a fan of the side.

I usually go to the World Cup and the Euros. Usually go for a week and try to get to as many games as possible. I don't care who is playing. I know a load of people who do exactly the same.

Half the fun of going somewhere is the stuff you do in between the games - sightseeing, travelling, eating, drinking.

This will be the first tournament I've missed by choice for donkeys years. Not one of the other regulars I know are going either.

The bottom line is there is fuck all to do in Qatar, nowhere to go, nothing to do, nothing to see.

I expect to see very low crowds at a lot of games - it could be a financial and PR disaster for FIFA.

Romania were better than Bulgaria. Loved it all.

Loved '94. Well I was living here by then. Went to see Ireland in Giants Stadium. 60k mental Paddies like me going nuts. My biggest regret however is not being able to go and see Argentina play Greece down the road in Foxborough (Sullivan Stadium at the time). I turned down a ticket for it as I was working that evening. Turns out it was Maradona's last ever game for them as he was drug tested and caught imbibing the old Colombia Marching Powder...I am still pissed off about missing that...

Argies or those British cunts. My prediction as an Irishman.

Naah. There are 3 million people in Qatar, and only 300,000 Qataris. That's 2.7 million other people who can be squeezed into games as needed, notwithstanding all the Saudis driving there and all the people from Egypt spending a month's income flying there. Stadia will be full, press releases will tell us what a success it is and any FIFA shortfall will be covered by the Qatari FA. If that doesn't happen, some people aren't doing their jobs right. Win win win. Only loser is the game of football, of course.
