2022 World Cup Discussion

Wanted to have bet on World Cup, but wholly lacking in necessary knowledge. Whilst washing pots, Don’t Cry For Me Argentina twice came up on Spotify this week, whilst on shuffle. Have about 1000 songs, so this is obviously a sign. One whole English pound duly invested

And yes, I know what you are thinking - why does this bozo have DCFMA by Julie Covington on his playlist?
I have about 500 on my play list including very few soul songs as punk and Indie are really my bag.

However, whilst on shuffle Al Green came on with “Let’s stay together”, Mrs H favourite artist. Next up Al Green, “Tired of being alone”. Didn’t work did it Al?

Does the alcohol decision make much difference? Just stay and drink as much as you can in your hotel before heading to the game. No one will want to be out in the heat anyway. Italia 90 they banned alcohol for 50 plus hours to combat the England hooligans they were so concerned about. The English just stocked up before that and stayed in their hotels boozing. Where there's a will there's a way.

I know many people aren't bothered by this tournament, and I get it. It's at a silly time in the year and it should never have been given to Qatar. But it shouldn't have been given to Brazil or Russia either. Both lacked the infrastructure and had major political/human rights issues. England could host the tournament at the drop of the hat. We'd just cause carnage on our own streets, fight with rival fans, racially abuse our own players and sing a lot.

A lot of people need to get off their high horse. The decision was made, it was obviously corrupt - as has since been uncovered. Let's let them get on with it now. Our own club has owners from Abu Dhabi who have their own rules around alcohol and gay rights and their own issues on human rights. Our own country has people dying in boats trying to get over here so they can visit Rwanda. Concentrate on the football. The wider issues are deep rooted and evident in every single country. No one whinged about the Climate Change conference taking place in Egypt, a country who has a (now)British citizen imprisoned and that will not release him and a poor record on human rights. Yet addressing climate change is viewed as a positive, so they park their dissent in that case.

Germany, Spain, France and Belgium to have poor tournaments. England v Argentina in the final. It's coming home.

Same. That Alan Partridge shoulder shrug gif sums up my feelings at the moment. Maybe when we get to the knockout stages, I might get a bit more excited about it.

Same

Usually I’m buzzing a few days out but it just isn’t doing anything for me. By now I’m usually watching anything World Cup related on YouTube and whatnot but not this time. Probably won’t even watch the opening game on Sunday.

Hopefully when the games start I’ll get into it. At least there’s a few decent games on Monday, including an England, so maybe that’ll kick things into gear.

Does the alcohol decision make much difference?

Yes to me itr does, as it's just another issue piled on top of whats already a shit sandwich. Whats to stop them from doing other 'uturns' on issues over the coming days. For 12 years they have said 'we will serve alcohol at grounds' and 48 hours before the event they decide to not do that...

It's unclear what other things such as the issues around homosexuality they will 'uturn' on.

A lot of blokes will struggle to find a block in the South End.

I doff my cap to the mighty England football team ......who have won one fucking tournament more than Wales, ever, in the history of football & that was because it was held in England.
Go England, you are awesome.
I can't sing by the way :)
Just an aside on that, there were only 16 teams at the 1966 World Cup, straight from the play offs to the quarter final where they played Argentina who had Rattin sent off in the 36th minute, Geoff Hurst scored the winner in the 77th minute, beat Portugal 2-1 in the semis, you know the rest. The group stages had four pots split into South America, Europe, Southern Europe and the Rest of the World which included North Korea. The group games were far more competitive than they are now.
