2022 World Cup Discussion

There is definitely hypocrisy from the British journalists going to Qatar and accepting their hospitailty whilst harping on about human rights wrt immigrants and LGBTQ+ community. We have a home secretary calling immigrants an invading force and dreaming of sending plane loads of them to Rwanda. We have Awab Ishak whose family are immigrants from the Sudan being housed in damp and mouldy community housing. And we don't have a single LGBTQ+ footballer in the english leagues who have come out whilst playing. If we're so progressed as a society why would there still be a stigma attached if we are all so OK with LGTBQ+ identifying people? People in glass houses springs to mind.

What the fuck is Infantino going on about? Has lost his fucking mind?

“today I feel Arab, today I feel African, today I feel gay, today I feel migrant worker. "

Fuck me!

I imagine if I was a migrant worker and a gnomic swiss lawyer who's been implicated in offshore corruption told me he was standing in solidarity with me, my heart would swell with happiness and then I'd ask him for an upfront sub on all the riches his progressive approach would eventually deliver for me.

Even by Fifa standards the degree of cynicism in that rant was spectacular.

I can't agree.

Everything about this world Cup is wrong. The two leading figures Platini and Blatter found to be corrupt with the latter recently admitting this should not have gone ahead. It is too small a venue for a WC.

This was supposed to be in summer in air conditioned stadiums, instead moved to winter. With no build up and many "Legacy" (**** of a word) fans pissed off their seasons have been interrupted in this fashion. As a fan experience I can't imagine this will be great. Hosting a WC a month before Xmas means most people won't be able to attend.

Just to be clear, I thought Russia was a disgrace of WC an I am amazed how little criticism there has been of that decision. FIFA look ridiculous right now, they would hold the World Cup in the Astropark in Didsbury if the back hander was big enough. This is another slow step, nation's league etc to international football becoming obsolete.
Agree with your comment. But it is also true that the UK press coverage of Qatar has been very unfair and distorted. For example still repeating the false Guardian story about 6,500 workers dying on the World Cup work. The figure is total deaths from all causes over a prolonged period. Migrant workers make up 80 per cent of the population of Qatar so the figure which includes heart disease and cancer is not as bad as painted.

It’s not the Qataris, or FIFA, or Southgate or the players that’s putting me off this World Cup, it’s the sanctimonious hypocrisy of the media going on all the time as if western cultural lifestyle is the yardstick to judge all other cultures by. It’s exactly the same as what they do to us and our owners. It’s racism.

Honestly, I was there nearly ten years. The majority of my social circle were in their 20’s and 30’s and heavy weekend drinkers, no one ever got into trouble for being drunk and a great many taxi drivers had to pull over to let people be sick.

Qatar has lost my support with its latest u-turn but people need to take a lot of what the media portray with a huge mountain of salt.

Been all over the Middle East and never once had any problems with drinking alcohol. Even drank with the Bahrain Chief of Police in the Brit Club, **** was smashed. Only thing he didn't allow was anyone taking photos.

I didn't bother with alcohol in Kuwait, though.

Hope we get some streakers to liven this WC up I might tune in then
