Hopeful for this guy although slightly concerned that he isn't actually a left back and has only played there for one season!

He played in the under 17 World Cup for Spain against Phil and was there stand out player. Against most teams he will be playing much higher up the pitch and will seriously compliment either Phil or jack. I am seriously excited about the link up.

What's he like mate is he good? I don't like to watch the YouTube highlights!
Sergio Gomez was one of the best players in Belgium last season. His games before new year were really incredible.

When he came to us, Vinny decided to play him out as a left back. At Huesca and the Spanish national team he mostly played as a midfielder. At first Kompany got lots of criticism (what's new in Belgium) for doing that, because Gomez had some defensive flaws. but in the system of Kompany Gomez got an essential role. Almost every game he had an assist, and his defensive positioning got better. His passing is really great, especially putting the ball in front of the goal.

After new year opponents started to adapt to Gomez. And at the end of the season he struggled with some fitness issues. With at the end some pubalgie troubles.
He has good pace, and also works hard.

His biggest weakness is his positioning defensilvly.
Gomez is a fun wingback to watch, thanks to Kompany. And made big steps defensively, but still has some room to improve.

His strengths are his crosses, had tons of assists before newyear , but also some very good short passing with the central midfield.

Is there actually any video highlights of Gomez defending? Pretty much all the videos I’ve seen has been about his crosses and overall attack. Not sure what to make of that. Hopefully he’s not another Angelino or Zinchenko, decent forward but lousy in defence. Will be exciting to watch him!

I'll happily take another Zinchenko, thank you very much.

Zinchenko wanted to leave. I find it hard to grasp why people find this tough to understand.

Have you thought about why he wanted out? Because a better leftback was coming in and his limited game time would get even more limited. Most likely City revealed their plans to add Cucurella and opened the door for Zinchenko to leave. It was obvious he wanted to stay here.

His reasons are immaterial: every player knows that they have to compete. I love Zin, and I understand his reasons for leaving, but you have to be up for the challenge.

If that’s the case there was no point in selling him

Exactly. We were overconfident in getting a replacement. If we could go back then I'm sure we'd have tried to keep him. But let's just give the new guy a chance first.

Cancelo last season made 83 tackles and was dribbled past 45 times

Zinchenko made 20 tackles and was dribbled past 9 times

Gomez made 53 tackles and was dribbled past 16 times

So at least statistically Gomez is harder to get past. He intercepted much better than Zin but slightly less than Joao(who is very good at it). He blocked more passes and crosses than both whilst Zin was comfortably the best at blocking shots.
Anderlecht averaged 55% possession which would have been 4th most in the Prem last season so it's not like he's putting out those numbers in a defensive team.
