Has he ever really hit the ground at city ? Maybe his first few games when he joined but since the injuries he’s looked poor.

Traore will give any fullback a tough game, especially if they are on a booking and isolated with him. That being said, didn't get anywhere near him all second half, didn't influence Traore at all or make life difficult for him. Just got ran around, repeatedly, but luckily they repeatedly missed the great chances his pullbacks created

He's lost so much pace since the injuries, even Neto who I hadn't considered to be pacy ran past him easily tonight. His general defending was poor I thought.

I agree, generally he is the weakest link in our defence and although his passing is generally ok I always feel like he is due a brain fart moment.

At least he was available for selection!

It’s the first game, he was hit and miss as usual but I’ll take that if he’s available significantly more often than not

Defensively Mendy worries me, not just tonight, but there were times when players walked round him tonight. He needs to stop more crosses getting into the box. Admittedly, Traore is fairly unstoppable at times, but he didn’t have to do much to get round Mendy and it wasn’t just him walking round him.

Don’t want to be too harsh as it was the first game, he needs to find some sharpness over the coming weeks.

Yellow coupled with wolves pushing Traore up in the second half meant it was going to be very difficult for him. I don’t think he got enough support at times either, Sterling went off the boil with his covering in the second half.

That is the problem for our left-back, whoever plays there, they’ll get minimal help from Sterling so it’s essential they’re comfortable when faced with a one-on-one situation, neither Mendy or Zinchenko are (neither was Angelino).

He won it back high up a few times and played some clever passes so I don't think he had a terrible game, positioning mostly alright too. But still seems laboured when running, getting beaten by Traore fair enough but the other Wolves player (Neto?) took the long way around and left him behind easily. Most players would be affected by two years out with bad injuries, athleticism was one of Mendy's biggest strengths and pace is so important for a full back.

A bit like Zinchenko in the sense that I really don't think he offers enough going forwards to offset how much they both struggle defensively. Fullback is all about pace since genuine wingers became the norm so if you haven't got pace, you're always going to be fighting an uphill battle. His injuries have taken a yard away from him that he couldn't afford to lose. Leave him one on one with a winger and you are in big trouble
