People have a short memory on here. He was our best player in the first few months of the season. Currently, we have no midfield or defence, and he is obviously very badly affected by it. His confidence is rock bottom. Put him next to Akanji, Dias, Stones, or Ake in a back 4 consisting of 4 CBs and we will stop leaking goals. We don't have fit players to do so? Maybe it's FINALLY time to buy a a new RB and a new CB since some of our player can't stay fit (Stones, Ake) and others are done at this level (Kyle), or shouldn't be defenders (Rico).

He’s not the only player making silly mistakes. I guess part of it is a combination of rotating on-field partnerships, due to injuries, meaning you’re often alongside second choice players. But mainly, I would think, due to mass loss of confidence and fear of losing yet again. Nobody looks perky and most are more intent on getting rid of the ball than doing something with it.

These things pass. Just a question of when.

So you just don't regard him as a good footballer full stop? No use in defence or midfield?

Interesting.

I mean at elite level. He's young and has a lot to learn, but would do a reasonable job in midfield for a lower/mid table club.

Bearing in mind that's what we've been looking like recently, and the charges still to be finalised, he could have a long future with us!

On a serious note, he's not lived up to the initial hype around him, or the over-inflated fee we paid for him. If he was at a club like West Ham or Fulham etc, we probably wouldn't have any interest in him.

Gvardiol is like akanji. Ok, look fair enough alongside stronger players but when THEY have to be the stronger player they mentally go to pieces.
Difference being between the two is that akanji cost 10 bob and gvardiol cost a stupid amount

Never understand why posters get so hung up on the fees paid.

If the management are happy to invest whatever amount why should supporters get so wound up on it ?

I can only think it is the tribal aspect, where fans of other teams criticise the fees paid, but seriously who gives a fuck about them and their opinions of how we deal in the transfer market ?

Christ there is enough evidence of overpaying for players only a few miles away to ever be worried about our dealings.

And tbh who are the supposed experts on here as far as fees are concerned, because it is all unsubstantiated opinion imo ?

Two obvious reasons:

- Whatever you spend on one player is less to spend on another.
- It’s ingrained in many of us not to be profligate. I could afford to pay £20 for a kilo of potatoes but I won’t.

Personally I don’t get wound up too much because the amount of money sloshing round in transfer fees and wages is obscene anyway and all the big clubs are at it.

My point remains , ok with good players around him, gets found out when he needs to be a main man

Our sporting director clearly made a mistake of purchasing Josko Gvardiol without bringing a left back together/beforehead. It is on the poor squad planning. Get a left back holding width for him before making judgement. Same goes with all the wingers.

Never seen someone with such an obvious lack of confidence in himself, constant dithering & being far too placid in the tackle just add to his problems

I thought he was solid with an exception of that one poor header in the first half, although his confidence is low right now. There were others who made errors, even more of them too, and they could have also resulted in goals. He needs a rest, but surely nobody doubts his quality? It's obvious.
