24 | Joško Gvardiol - 2025/26

Agree with many, he needs a rest. But he’s still a formidable defender. He’s looked a little sloppy now and then. But he’s still defending well.
I’d also guess he’s missing Ederson the most, as he’s like Stones and will do anything but lump it, leading to the odd sloppy pass.

I also think it’s worth remembering that he’s fairly new to CB in this league. He had a lot more space and freedom at left back. He’s also very very young still, I think he’s class and is t far off the perfect defender.
Ironically it was the space he left as a full-back that is his problem when he plays there

As I posted in another thread, we haven't lost a league game with Dias/Gvardiol at CB.

23 PL games played (including last season), 11 clean sheets. Top quality.

This season, 6 PL games with Dias/Gvardiol at CB, 5 wins and a draw, 3 clean sheets, two of them against United and Liverpool.

We conceded 1 goal vs United, Arsenal and Liverpool combined...

I think people either don’t see it or don’t even care but the amount of times Dias plays the pass to gvardiol at the last second to put him under pressure. It happens at least 5 times a game.
For me he had a very good game. If you are a CB and there‘s 3 players around you and certain team mates still pass you the ball - it’s not always your fault that you are going to lose the ball.

Still balling Dias out whenever he loses a footrace or whatever
Love Gvardiol, but that's nonsense. I played at CB a fair amount in my time. He made some absolutely shocking passes with no one around him and under zero pressure. That's actually when he messes up. He's very good under duress but can become a bit lackadaisical when he has loads of time. Sometimes it looks like he doesn't respect the opposition, like they're not even there. I'm sure that's not it, but he might actually be a bit too confident at times. That said, he's 100% a plus defender. Pep needs to make sure he cuts that sloppy shit out if his game.

It's these sort of performances that just leave me disappointed. No huge mistakes, just doesn't elevate your defense enough. Poor in the air, weak on the tackle, and in st james' park that's what gets you beat.

Didn't do much wrong for me, had a very poor O'Reilly to bail out constantly beside him today and Dias who cannot seem to avoid diving in. Him and Nunes played well for me, at worst, he was fine.

Maybe Gvardiol deserves a rest, so that the patella injury could clear up, would like to see how Khusanov does over a few games, he would certainly have no problem covering the whole left side of the defense, his pace would be a huge asset in this area - today he would not have been bullied as others were (without censure from the referee), Tonali and Jolinton committed foul after foul all game long - disgraceful
