26 | Savinho - 2025/26

He feels a long way from scoring 20 a year like Mahrez did. Even when Mahrez was crap he still scored.
Mahrez did, in fairness, score 10+ a season in all comps in his early seasons. Savinho's shooting is a little bit of a glaring weakness at the mo. I still think he'll end the season on around 8 goals though.

Mahrez was also 5-6 years older. Some people just hate to hate huh. At the same age mahrez was in Ligue 2

This forum isn't titled "Fan Boys - Praise Our Players' Latest Performance"... it's an actual critique forum - where points both good and bad are advanced. So go on - state your argument for a player - and then see how it resonates. Perhaps you'll agree with the posts in such threads... perhaps not. But to label criticism as "just hate to hate" - misses the point of this forum altogether.

If you abhor any criticism of a City player whatsoever, this forum isn't for you.

Savinho is clearly struggling - I think we should have sold him to spurs when we had the chance. Yes he might eventually overcome his weaknesses and become a Mahrez-like player... but the odds are against this.

Meanwhile, praising Savinho for his good performances, while criticizing him for his poor performances - and then expressing opinions about him - whether good or bad - is what this forum is about.

"Some people just hate" - is well off the mark. If you desire praise or backing of our players no matter what - this forum isn't for you.

Seems like a nice young feller with his head screwed on. Amazes me how young they have kids footballers.

Also can see when he talks about Brazil that there's a good chance he fancied the Spurs move so he could play regularly and get to the World Cup. Feel like we've convinced him to sign a new contract and promised him all the game time he's been getting recently.

I guess if you have the money you can do that + he’s Brazilian they tend to get kids by the age of 17-18 already

It's not about criticism, it's more about those posters that learn absoloutely nothing about young players development even though we've seen too many to count throughout the game over the years particularly at City too over the years.

Mind you, perhaps it's because those same posters also remember players who never did step up?

Reading through the Villarreal match thread, there was at least one predictable 'where are the Sav haters now?' post.

That's the equivalent of a striker who hasn't scored in a year putting his finger to his lips after shinning one in - it doesn't undo a year of crap performances.

There are signs he could go on to be a great player for us but too often frustrates. I can forgive that though as he’s still young and learning.
Hopefully when he finds his consistency it’s with us and we see the benefits of persevering with him.

Yes, but predicting which players will step up is sn't always possible, especially 21 year old ones, so writing them off with so many examples of being proven wrong doesn'tmake any sense.

Disagree.

It's rare that some young player grows leaps and bounds above his potential, in spite of potential. Sometimes this happens - but it's the exception rather than the norm. Meanwhile criticism for actual performance right now - or indeed praise - is, well, reflective of performances..., right now.

Sure Savinho may become the next Robben or at least grow far better - but I think that the odds are that he is now as he will always be. Full of potential but not quite there - lacking in end product. Time will tell.

But given the fact that Spurs valued Savinho so highly, and given that we have a lot of players able to play RW... I think we should have sold him.

That said... I love Savinho's team ethic and work rate - he's a team player and works his ass off on both sides of the ball every game.

No it's not more players reach their potential around 23 /24 than don't,KDB, Kane, Doku, Salah, Mahrez just off the top of my head.

Adama Traore, Mykhailo Mudryk, Mario Balotelli, Memphis Depay, Benjamin Mendy and on and on and on. And these were the supposed next superstars, let alone those merely showing promise.

Sure some make it big - but most do not.

So whats your point, that we don't know ? Yes I agree that was exactly my point. 21 is too young for you or me to know one way or the other, because it's not most at all you've just made that up to suit yourself.

My point is that Savinho - for me - looks like he won't make it. And that Spurs offered a huge sum for him. And that we should have taken the sale - especially since Savinho seems to have wanted the transfer. And that further we are not lacking in players able to play RW. So if we sold him, it wouldn't hurt squad depth.

But he's in our side - and I route for him and hope he'll succeed in spite of my misgivings. Meanwhile - I'll criticise or praise his performances each game as reflected by his on field performance.

So just your guess, think I'll leave it to Pep and his coaches thanks.

You disagree. That's fine - it's what this forum should be about. No need for rancor.

Let's see where he is at the end of this season - you may well be right, or I may be, or it may still be unclear. We'll see.

When teenagers like Yamal & Estêvão (chelski) & others etc burst on to the scene, it spoils it for others who are a wee bit older & not as talented yet.
