When he signed from Juventus i was under the impression he was a brilliant attacking full back who has a decent shot and a goal threat , he is neither , and an average defender as well , the only good thing about signing Cancelo is that Walker has played better and is now fighting for his place , Cancelo isnt even an upgrade on Danilo , Pep has dropped a bollock with this signing.

Tbh, and in my opinion, our recruitment in relation to defenders is to say the least mind-boggling and alarming, Laporte apart, since the season Pep arrived, can we really say we have any world class defenders or at least defenders of note currently within the club or those we have let go in the last three seasons??? So who is scouting these and preparing the dossiers, Raiola, Mendes or Barry Silkman(remember his time with us)!!! Someone somewhere is making a shitload of money from this, and were the ones suffering week in week out, my ticker certainly is, everytime Stones, Cancelo, Mendy or el Generale for that matter get near the ball!!!

Walker has been a great buy as well, other than that yea most defenders we bought with Pep haven’t been a success.

Cancelo just wasn’t on the same page as everyone else.

he came here known as of best the attacking right backs and really hasn’t shown it. Did he even register an assist? Disappointing to be honest.

Looks like he tried to be smart ass with pep at some time. Never a road to success.

The thing that annoys me is that we buy full backs of a certain type and with certain attributes and then totally change the way they play. I think everyone would have labelled Walker and Mendy as attacking full backs, in Mendys case arguably the most dangerous attacking full back in world football. Now we have them both stood on the half way line playing 5 yard square balls to Rodri.

Walker was an excellent signing, Mendy should have been and still can be but injuries cant be predicted, Stones has had his great moments and played a large role in 8 trophy wins but obviously his confidence has been shattered.

The Dani Alves move falling through really screwed us I suppose. Danilo was never going to be happy on the bench forever and Cancelo seems to have started unhappy and gotten worse.

It's very hard to find defenders for Peps system. You need to be excellent on the ball, have great physical characteristics and be mentally flawless.

Not a lot of those around....

For 60mil you'd expect a Dani Alvesesque RB. This guy ain't it.
Thats a terrible logic.

Blame City's executives for paying that fee, not the player.

Fairly obvious that he doesnt want to be here. Hence his disinterested performances.

Considering City say they make a big deal over not just playing ability but the whole person they definitely dropped a bollock with this guy.

Why?

I am sure Bernardo was asked about him, Pep is very good pals with people at Juventus. We knew what we were buying, doesn't matter how much of a top guy you were if you move to Manchester and hate it here. He's just had a baby, could be stress in his relationship. Give the lad a break.

Doesn't make sense to me also.

Angelino and Cancelo brought in, both very attacking fullbacks in style, yet we were playing with inverted fullbacks in Walker and Zinchenko.

Was the intention for the long term plan to play wide fullbacks? We have almost never seen this, with only Mendy doing that, and not as often as I'd thought.

It's all very strange because I think our recruitment in terms of midfielders or forwards is basically perfect, I can't think of a player we brought in who didn't adapt or play a role in our system. Yet defensively I'm baffled, maybe the club should save some money here because they haven't been that smart and try some youth. Would love to see Tosin given a chance next season with Otamendi gone, and see Eric and Harwood-Bellis given back up roles.

I don't know if the academy is producing any fullbacks of talent, but the perfect Pep inverted fullback is extremely hard to find, you want a player who is:

1) Fast like Walker (or almost as fast)
2) Can control and pass the ball like Zinchenko (or almost as good)
3) But can defend like... well a decent defender (which apparently Cancelo and Angelino aren't good enough for)

Neither Walker or Zinchenko are perfect inverted fullbacks but do well enough. At Bayern, Lahm and Alaba fit this so perfectly.
