27 | Matheus Nunes - 2024/25

"Grealish is told to play like that"

Strange that every other winger beats a man and creates chances and I include Nunes recent cameos out wide.

Grealish is very good at beating his man and used to create chances at Villa, for me it's down to him and I do think he has self confidence issues at times.

He'd have been sold if he was directly going against Pep's instructions. Never mind that, he wouldn't have been a mainstay in the treble winning side if he wasn't doing exactly what was required of him.

end of the day we need end product from wingers. doesnt matter who but we need those goals and assists. we can afford Grealish extremly low numbers when others are all firing and add lot of goals into the tally Foden, Gundo, KDB, Haaland, Mahrez, Alvarez, Rodri etc. when that is not there and only Haaland is delivering goals in some games we cannot afford Grealish imo.

Raphinha at Barca already close to 20 goal contribution this season(G+A) and its early November only. I want to see a winger like that at City. and were in the mix when he signed for Barca...
1 league goal from all four so far.. pitiful return really. Need to be more clinical & confident.

No other wingers face the number of teams fielding packed defences that we do. They often have space to run into, or know that if they beat a man they're clean through - our guys rarely get that kind of opportunity.

It's only partial mitigation though, granted.

He’s obviously playing as per Peps instructions of don’t give the ball away, unlike Doku who seems to do as he wants…….

Nunes has been a breath of fresh air the last few games and needs to stay involved while his confidence is up. I'm not sure where that is though.

Id like to see McAtee given a go where Gundogan plays, as he's neater in possession than Nunes and has the energy and pressing ability that Gundogan no longer has. What that would mean for the overall midfield balance though, I'm not sure.

On a slightly different note, I think it's about time we scored first in a match again, and a lot of our problems would disappear if we could do that more often again. No surprise that teams sit back against us, but I'd like to see us taking more shots from that start of the match, whenever we get 20-25 yards out. Nothing might come of most of them, but it adds to the other team's concerns and might draw defenders out, opening up a few spaces.

Like to see wingers taking on defenders…..can’t remember the last time Jack went passed a full back on the outside……or the inside for that matter

Agreed. I prefer an exciting winger but can appreciate what Grealish brings to the team too. Even if it's not as pleasing on the eye sometimes.
