27 | Matheus Nunes - 2025/26

We do need a right back because in the premier league he will get exposed by the pace if our game like he did last season . I would not get rid of nunes as with every game he is getting better for us but once the season kicks in the expectation will go through the roof and nunes and Rico Lewis will not cut it .
2nd fastest player in the Premier league last season mate.

I like him and believe he has done well, but we need a RB a few times he is not quite technical enough or accurate with his passes.

Effort, likeable and very talented.

Do think he would be better a step down playing in his preferred position.

Think we need to sign a RB and he’d be good enough as back up, but hard to see when Rico is home grown and been at the club so long.
You must be blind, did you not see how he linked up with Kalulu? Good understanding between those two.

Excellent but it's nothing he hasn't been doing for large parts of last season. Been saying for ages, he's everything we are looking for in a fullback.

We have lewis, akanji, khusanov, stones all capable of playing right back as well as Nunes. they'll all be looking for minutes and that's how we give them some.
Besides, we can always buy shiny new players but it's nice to give players a chance.
It's easy to forget we've won so much with Delph as left back.

Anyone who thinks Livramento would be a significant improvement over Nunes is likely dreaming.

Not against signing Livramento, but 70-80m is too much for a prospective FB. We ain't paying such money.
He would be defensively and we need a top clsss right back. We’ve got a very attacking team now and a left back who’ll bomb on all game. Livramento will help sure up the defence and give us balance. Nunes is doing really well but we need 2 for that position. I’m not having Rico is good enough and don’t want stop gaps in there once we have one injury during a long season.

Rico isn't good enough vs good teams, but he can do the job vs teams where we can control the opposition without problems and he plays more in midfield than in defence.

I think at least one from Akanji and Khusanov will stay, they can play there too.

Again, would make sense to buy Livramento but they would want huge money. One solution would be to send to them players we are ready to sell and/or loan out, especially Grealish and McAtee, or maybe even Ake or Stones...

So are you happy to go with nunes for right back ? This is not a dig as that is your opinion mate but I would rather us go with a proper right back .

We won 100 pts with Delph who wasn't a proper LB and 98 pts with Zinchenko who wasn't one either.

We won everything with Akanji at RB (at Walker's expense) who wasn't a proper RB as well. We beat Real 5:1aggr. that season with Akanji playing at LB (replacing Ake who was injured then).

Having a *proper* something (insert position) is often overrated by fans.

Obviously defensively he still has his flaws and against the top teams in the PL and CL I think he can be exposed. However, as an attacking wing back the lad has put in some decent performances which was evident against Juventus.

94% pass completion last night. And technically much better than Walker.

I'd be amazed if Walker or, say, Kerkez ever had 94% pass accuracy.

I thought he was absolutely superb last night, some of the positions he was popping up in on the pitch were outrageous.

Its taken time but he's turning into a great Pep player.

Funny Nunes mistakes are magnified more because of the Derby and can see that but a lot of our players make mistakes leading to goals Akanji Ederson Gvardiol Dias Lewis but because they’ve been good over a long period it’s just not mentioned a lot!

Listen to pep after last night game he seems to love him as a person around the squad and thinks he can be a top right back for us! Maybe we hold of on Livamento for a year!?

I thought I would come back to the Nunes thread as I had had a proper go at him near the end of the season. Other blues were calling me out for saying that he makes too many mistakes and he generally wasn't good enough. Well I'm here to apologise to the lad about those comments as he has really improved and I was probably being unfair to the lad as his performances at the end of the season and especially last night was very impressive indeed. Keep it up Mateus lad.

Eddie last night.

I think he's come on leaps and bounds in the RB position. He's got so much athleticism and is starting to understand when to go and when to sit.

He's not perfect but I really like his performances. I would still sign a proper RB but I've no qualms with Nunes being part of the squad.

When did he play his first game at RB for us? The trajectory he's been on since is superb. You can't judge a player just on their errors, every player we've had has made mistakes. It's how they react and the consistency they show and Nunes has continued to improve and in my opinion has reached a level that means we don't need to buy a RB, certainly not one that is going to cost a fortune. We've got more defensive players who can play there if required and we have a "proper" LB now so why would we bother changing the habit of Pep's time with us and having a "proper" fullback on both sides?

I hope your right.

For me, I think there is the potential for that but don’t see us winning a CL with him.

I genuinely like the guy and do believe he has done a lot to improve (he obviously listens, learns and try’s hard in training).

I just don’t think he is technically good enough and whether at times it’s concentration, just has a mistake.

I don’t think we have another CM we could have moved over and done such a good job.

He has done so, so well.

But our standards must ultimately be higher and it is the obvious place where we can improve

A foreign spot for a reserve RB, is the issue when we are short.

If it wasn’t for squad planning, I think we would all agree.

The one saving grace might be if we get a home grown RB.
