27 | Matheus Nunes - 2025/26

I say one thing. If he gets injured, we could easily be fucked. No other option to play high up. Would mean changing rhe whole system for a center half or Lewis at right back

There are 2 options

First:

----------------Ederson---------------------
-----Akanji----Ruben-----Gvardiol--------
----------Bernie-----Rodri-------------------
----------Foden-----Reijnders --------------
Matheus-----Haaland-------------Ait-Nouri

Second:

----------------Ederson---------------------
-----Khus------Ruben-----Gvardiol--------
----Akanji/Rico-----Rodri-------------------
----------Foden-----Reijnders --------------
Savio/Bobb-----Haaland-------------Doku

So I think Pep will constantly rotate between these two and there are plenty of options of Matheus is injured or not available.

Savio or Bobb as LW and Khusanov playing as a RCB or RB, while Akanji or Rico play inverted fullback or centre-back.

I think it's more likely that Pep does neither of the options you listed.

Your first system has a back 5, which Pep never does, with the wingbacks going wide.

Your 2nd system appears to be the treble system but using Akanji instead of Stones. I like this system but don't think we have seen it in ages.

More likely we see a hybrid of this, not double wingbacks or double wingers, but 1 of each, in a lopsided 4231.

This means we play one of Ait Nouri and Nunes, but not both.

I like the 4231 where both play, but it might be a better use of players and rotation to play some of the wide wingers.

Against Juventus in the second half he played this system:

----------------Ederson---------------------
-----Akanji----Ruben-----Ait-Nouri--------
----------Bernie-----Gundo------------------
----------Foden-----Reijnders --------------
Matheus-----Haaland-----------------Savio

1 fullback wide and 1 winger wide.

Not a big fan of Ait Nouri that deep though.

They will come up with this in 2028
Its like a stuck record with some on here, IMO the last 10 games last season he was probably the best performer. I am not sure what else he can do. Just because he was not signed as a RB does not mean he can't become and isn't already and really good fit in our team..

I think we'll play 2 systems anyway depending on the opposition , sometimes Nunes high up with a more solid midfield 3, sometimes either Lewis or Khusonov/ Akanji playing inverted next to Rodri and Reijnders and maybe a more adventurous player at 10. Either way 5 forward thinking 5 more defensive thinking players.

And neither of these teams contain 50mill nico G

As if 10 games at the end of a poor season where there was comparatively no pressure is enough. Even in them 10 games he still made bozo mistakes. If Pep plans to use him so much why didn’t he play in our most important game?

Opta stats have Nunes as the second quickest player in the PL!
IMO he was the most improved player in the team last season and we looked a more balanced team when he played at RB.
What he lacked was the defensive experience of playing as a RB and maybe Pep feels that the new coaches can teach him those skills until personal experience gives him those skills. Seems well liked by his team mates too.

No pressure in the last 10 games, really?Apart from needing to win most of them.
“Comparatively” as in from the previous seasons. Did you just decide to miss that word. No way near as much pressure going for at worst 5th rather than 1st. That’s pretty common sense.

He played 10 games now all of a sudden he’s ready haha. Just wait until he fucks up.

You have your mind up fair enough, I just don't get what you are getting out of saying "just you wait until he fucks up"! Do you want that to happen just to prove your point and it being damaging to the team or can you not get behind a player and hope that the vast improvement continues and he becomes solid? Its pretty selfish if you do want him to fuck up to prove a point

That's a good point. Pep likes to pick different players with different skillsets against different opponents. An injury to him and the alternative system would have to be used against everyone. Not ideal.

Why wasn’t there anywhere near as much pressure? 5 teams all going for 3 available CL spots & it went down to the wire, not sure how that’s any different to pressure from previous seasons

Plus he won’t be the only one to make mistakes over the course of a season, so you just sound like you’re being snide towards one of our own

Of course I don’t want him to fuck up just to prove a point. I hope he proves me wrong. I feel it’s an inevitability he will though, he’s already proved it multiple times in the select games he has played there. What are we going to doing at Madrid/Bayern etc, we having Nunes there or Akanji.

My god, what? So going for 5th spot against 2 teams is anywhere near the pressure of going for the title, knowing one loss can be all it takes to lose the title…

Or lose champions league football, the same no maybe not ,but close.
But it wasn’t lose one and we don’t qualify for champions league. We were competing with other teams who were constantly dropping points too… as if it’s remotely the same.
