27 | Matheus Nunes - 2025/26

In fairness, Bernardo is there as the support DM to help bring cohesion and possession.

For the games Rodri shouldn't start in the next 13 days we need someone playing the Nico role.
Nunes, Dias, Gvardiol and Rico being the 4 most likely candidates.

I suspect, Pep will go with Nunes and or Rico.
Yes, appreciate that Bernie has usually been there to support Nico.
But, in my opinion, he is far too cautious and nearly always slows down any chance to counter-attack.
The first half last night, sums up Bernie's current form.
Seldom gives the ball away, but seldom puts opponents under any threat.
Think Nunes is a far more exciting prospect to accompany Rodri in midfield.
Nunes is an excellent footballer who can become a star in midfield, at last...

I dont know about becoming a star in midfield :) But he is an excellent option to consider for sure.

He was brilliant again last night against a decent winger and he never gave him a sniff. What has impressed me most is how quickly he has learned to defend. He’s strong and fast and has almost taken over the Kyle Walker “last man back” role. I am very happy to eat my words with Nunes as I had written him off but he’s proved me and many others wrong.

Our right wing was dead again with him and Bernie, Semenyo can't come soon enough.

Yet again another strong showing. Been our most consistent player this season. Had a very tricky opponent in Neto, was given zero help from Cherki yet completely shut him and that side down. Outstanding.

Nunes is currently playing the walker role most weeks and covering the ball in behind so if he's following instructions, he isnt going to be offering anything offensively.

You can argue that's a waste as he's probably the best crosser in the side and one of a very select few that will make forward runs off the ball, I think he adds a lot to our attack when he's given that role but with a lack of pace in the back 4 he's restricted to being the sweeper. It's not currently his job to be providing an attacking threat.

Him and O Reilly have to play even more due to injuries.

But I think we need to lessen the intensity in running they have been doing as attacking fullbacks, going up and down the pitch.

Maybe we do a John Stones system with a CB into midfield and let him and O Reilly be the wide CBs in a back 3, helping the lack of buildup from losing Gvardiol.
