33 | Nico O'Reilly - 2025/26

Ake can't run anymore. He would have been far worse than Nico.
Ake did the job required of him, he went into a back 3 freeing Nico OR from his wingback role and letting him go more into midfield, where I thought he improved again.

It wasn't his best game today, but against a very good player, quite possibly the best he's faced so far.

He did make a nice clearance, but in the few games we've seen of him this year, he's looked past it. I think Hutchinson would have been a bad matchup for him.

I don’t think I’ve seen him use his right foot all season. It’s amusing, so keep an eye on it. He’s the most one footed player in the league.

I've been saying the same thing for a while (as per my post after the West Ham game) and I keep waiting for a left footed right winger to come inside and rip him to shreds, as he can only tackle with his left foot.

However, we're almost halfway through the season so perhaps they don't exist anymore.

This has been evident from the off, FA cup final he had what was essentially a tap in on his right foot and he took an extra touch to take it to his left foot and the chance had gone.

Not like he is the only one though, majority of our team have a very strong reluctance to use their weak foot.

I'm not talking about pinging a 60 yard ball with their weak foot but when there's an opportunity to score or when a defensive player needs to get rid a lot of our team will still try to get it on to their strong foot first. Gvardiol, Rodri, kovacic, doku and Cherki are probably the only players that don't hesitate to use their weak foot.

20 year olds are inconsistent by default. He looked very poor yesterday and for some reason very slow (and he’s not slow!).

But that is going to happen at his age. He’ll have a number of games being that poor in the next 12-months, but overall he looks like he’s going to be a very good player.

He’d never played for the first team before January 2025 so not even been in the first team a year yet. He hadn’t played LB since he was about 15 either until January 2025.

He’s learning the position and senior football well and has had a great debut year. He’s quick, strong, reads the game well, is good positionslly and uses his body size well when winning the ball back or keeping the ball.

His crossing is very poor even in games when he plays well and he seems to lose the ball high up the pitch in tight situations a bit too easily… so a bit to work on, but at 20, he’s certainly got years to do that.

Ideally, at 20, he’d only maybe be playing 2x full 90-minutes a month. Unfortunately, Ait-Nouri has been out injured or unfit when on the bench or O’Reilly has been too good to drop, so he’s not been afforded more of a sporadic introduction to first team senior football. With that, he’ll have the inevitable poor games here and there.

Like with his England debut. He was excellent on his debut but that is where it should have been left for a 20 year old’s introduction to international football for that international break. But Tuchel picked him for the very next game a few days later and he was poor. But it’s inevitable that could happen as it so often does with young lads and he should have picked someone else for the second game.

But O’Reilly is looking like a top prospect and I hope he makes the City and England LB spot his own for years when he learns the position fully, gets used to senior football and heads towards his prime.

It didn’t seem to affect Merlin…
It did at times. He often turned down good goalscoring chances that weren’t on his left foot, often opting to take a touch onto his left foot for a shot but being closed down or passing instead of shooting and the goalscoring opportunity would be lost.

That used to happen a fair bit and you’d hear the whole stadium shouting ‘just shoot, man’ at him.

It was the one bad part of his game and he didn’t score enough goals at City for how good a player he was.

Had a poor game. Dont think he knows yet how to get himself into the game when he's got a wide man infront of him and hes expected to come inside more. when he's asked to provide the width, it simplifies his game and he does it well, anything else and he starts to struggle and seems a bit lost.

Got caught out once again a few times with the basic give and go, its a glaring weakness that needs working on urgently. I'm not laying into him here, he's been phenomenal and is getting better by the game but a few games sitting out, maybe coming on from the bench is probably due for him now.

Shame Stones cannot be fit as our best team probably has Gvardiol as LB.

That said, I think what Nico has done at LB is exceptional given age, experience and it not being his natural position.

Yea think its time to rest here and there - he's had a huge season so far and still only a kid. They were getting in behind him far too easily last night

Has had an absolutely fantastic season so far.
A below average game yesterday (not the only one)
Will get a chance to be rotated and rested over the next few weeks.
Form is temporary.
Class is permanent.
This boy will be just fine.
Head up and keep going blue.
