33 | Nico O'Reilly - 2025/26

Pep needs to stop shoe horning him into midfield beside Bernardo don’t get me wrong I understand it but I just don’t think they complement each other not to mention 2 left footers at the base of midfield is way to predictable
Well there's a maximum of seven games in which that could possibly happen!

Was beaten to the ball a couple of times tonight which resulted in them running down on our goal. Awareness and anticipation is so important in the middle. Keep him on the left and let Nico G come in for Rodri.

Thing with him playing in midfield without Rodri will give Pep a lot of info on how he can improve O’Reily coach him what to how to do it when he plays there again!

Why do people want to limit O'Reilly's development to just being a LB for the rest of his career? He's got years to be able to perfect multiple roles and the issues he had as a midfielder last night are fixable. He has the talent to be brilliant in multiple roles and a great environment to learn them.

Because as Foden has found, being ‘taught’ different roles every season rather than specialise and develop in one can lead to levelling out in relative mediocrity.

Nico is impacting games from leftback, and has established himself as one of our best players already. Leave him there.

I was surprised with that starting lineup. Clearly Pep thought it would be more effective and lead to us scoring more. You can't argue we didn't create chances, but we were pretty open at the back as a result. I was expecting Nico to come in for Rodri. O'Reilly's link up play with Doku is so effective and we missed that. Ait-Nouri just wasn't influencing the game enough or helping Doku be as influential either.

If that Cherki chance goes in early in the first half and we're 2-0 up I think we'd have won by 4 or 5 though. Just one of those nights.

In the absence of Rodri, O'Reilly adds more physicality to midfield and is currently sharper than Gonzalez, so playing him there was understandable. However, being asked to shift positions in days is hard.

Not great, but not surprising - has played relatively few games in midfield for us in the PL.

Says a lot about what Pep thinks of his players though - clearly he love O'Reilly and rates him highly if he thinks he can shift him in as a Rodri replacement.

It also says that he doesn't entirely trust Gonzalez in there, otherwise that was an obvious game for him to start.

Think Guardiola has been stung by performances in recent seasons where he's made changes and it's backfired horribly. At the same time, he has now acknowledged that regular starters are showing signs of fatigue, so we might see more positional flexibility and more players brought back into the fold.

Our squad might lack the absolute quality of previous iterations, but it's arguably the deepest we've ever had, and that depth, if used prudently, could yet prove the difference.

Biggest concern for me is the fixture congestion and needing to rotate/rest some. We've gone a month or two playing the strongest team consistently, so if others have to come in now they do so with little match fitness.

That's been my concern for some considerable time, including when he did the same in the autumn. We have provided Guardiola with the biggest and deepest squad he's ever had, but he has continued to manage it as if operating with 16-17 players. Even our use and number of substitutions appears uncomfortably cautious. It may well prove successful domestically this season, but it's unsustainable if we are to succeed elsewhere.

Not sure Foden is a great example - had his best season for us after learning multiple positions and then dropped off, in part, due to off field problems. Stating that Nico should remain there this season is fine, thinking he can't develop into a brilliant midfielder or shouldn't even be given that opportunity is daft.

He gets caught coming towards the ball his back to goal quite alot when playing in the middle. You have that little bit less time and the press comes quick and from 360 degrees, its a bit different from playing our on the left. He will obviously get there in the end, but it shows how good you have to be to play pivot in our system - on his side is how coachable he must be given the way he tries to play it the way he is asked to, despite not quite being able to do it as well as Bernie, Rodri and Kova

Got a set of bollocks on him @ 21 so god help the league once he’s 25, fully grown and 5 years first team experience.
