35 years of hurt...your top five low points

I can't do 35 years as I'm 28 but ones I remember were:

West Ham in the quarter final a few years back (2006 I think). I thought we'd never have a better chance than that and we were shocking that night.

V Watford on a Monday night under Stuart Pearce. We drew 0.0, worst game I have ever seen.

The relegation under Alan Ball

The 5.0 at Old Trafford

Howard Kendall leaving to go to Everton bloody hurt as well!

Ugh! The Portsmouth game with Thatcher elbowing Mendes, two or three days after a pathetic effort after a 3-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, made me realise what a shit season we were in for.

1. Having the main derby fixture against Macclesfield in 1998-1999 as City were in a lower division than Oldham, Stockport, Bolton, Bury, and even Crewe!

2. Being robbed by a dubious penalty at Old Trafford in 1996 after leading at half time in an FA Cup tie.

3. Losing 3-2 to United after leading 2-0 with two Niall Quinn goals around 1993.

4. David Pleat's dance.

5. Tactical ineptitude at the end of the season against Liverpool that cost relegation in 1996 by taking the ball into the corner when 2-2. Another goal would have averted relegation.

Some other moments come to mind earlier than the 35 year period.

1. Going to a match at Wolverhampton v Aston Villa on Boxing day in 1964 and seeing David Wagstaffe turn out for Wolves having signed earlier that day for £40,000.

2. A 4-0 home defeat by Grimsby in 1964-65 with Roy Gratrix abysmal at centre-half.

3. An FA Cup defeat at Shrewsbury around 1965.

4. The lowest ever league attendance at Maine Road of 8,015 against Swindon in 1965. There was an even lower attendance against Middlesbrough in the League Cup the same season.

5. Watching the 1968 European Cup Final at Wembley (with tickets purchased from Benfica) at Eusebio missed a sitter in the last minute when 1-1 with United going on to win 4-1 in extra time.

hmmmmmm,

Point 1 is wrong by the way, Oldham were in the same division as us then. We beat them at Boundary Park 3.0 and they beat us at Maine Rd 2.1

All the shit things that have happened to us are what makes us the supporters today. You see Chelsea, the Scum, Liverpool, Arsenal, they've never had to experience what we've experienced and that is why we're the best supporters in the world bar none!!!

City Till I Die!!!

Chelsea have had some tough times and they were on the verge of bankruptcy before Abramovic stepped in

Yeh I understand that but my point was that the Chelsea fans of my age (26) have never had to experience their side being relegated to the 3rd tier of English Football. We were on the verge of going bust before the Shiekh took over weren't we?

The question was - over 35 years, wasnt it?<br /><br />-- Wed May 25, 2011 10:07 pm --<br /><br />

Think your spot on with them! They my top 5 also

Having read x12 pages, and contemplated all the offerings - the Luton relegation and that beige dancing suit has to be my most worse memory of all time............numbing moment when we finally accepted we were no longer a force in football.

Thanks for the correction.

I could have also added Wigan as a derby match that season. But I considered them as much of a jumped up non-league side as Macc.

The humiliation of being in a lower division than Bury, Bolton, and Stockport!

Lowest point ever in the history of our great Club was watching King Colin come on as sub in his first match back after the diabolical assault by Buchan and to witness almost everyone in the stadium with tears in their eyes as he used all his will and effort to no avail, absolutely heartbreaking to see our Greatest ever player clearly crippled, all but a pale shadow of his former Glory, absolutely devastating!

almost impossible this, there has been so many downs, reading all ur posts brought back some painful memories.

1) Has to be losing 5 nil to them lot and facing all the kids at my salford school.

2) having 5 managers in one season felt like nobody could save us and it ended in relegation to the third tier.

3) watching kit symons get torn to pieces and being 3 nil down at half time at stockport.

4) 3-2 home defeat to oxford united, andy dibble had a nightmare and so did every blue watching.

5) the night we brought on Barry conlon, nobody had ever heard of him, whole ground for a second thought this is a piss take then humour took over and chants of barry barry it helped me keep the faith.

That Oldham game at Maine Road in 1998 really sticks in my mind. I seem to remember being 2-0 down and 3 of their players had the ball and this really clear memory of Dickov chasing each of them down and they just kept it in a triangle, literally for about 3 minutes. Obviously it wasn't that long but I was about 7 years old at the time and it really sticks in my mind. The people around me were going mad.

I remember losing at home to Oxford 2-0. Again I was young so I didn't really get how bad it was. They had a big bloke up front who battered us and a fellow blue near me got so angry he resorted to racism. Seriously.

Another unusual moment I remember from 1997-98 season was when City brought on Tony Scully in a random game in which we were losing. I cannot remember who it was against for the life of me, but I was in the JD Family Stand as it was known then and again, people around me were just depressed, really down and one women behind me kept shouting, "Go on Scully" every time he got the ball, as if he was our saviour. I remember him being quite lively but we lost. (Shock)

I've got loads of random memories from those two shit seasons from 96-98. (Aged 5-7)

- Winning against Port Vale then losing the game.
- Losing 3-2 at home to Forest. Pretty sure Shelia scored a bullet header.
- Two Sunderland fans getting thrown out in front of me after taking the lead.

Relegation to Div 3.

Relegation to Div 2 in 1983.

Relegation to Div 2 in 1987.

Relegation to Div 2 in 1996.

Relegation to Div 2 in 2001.

(Proper, old style division numbers used throughout)

I was shocked and stunned by the 83 relegation but by 2001 I was used to such things. The relegation to div 3 was just staggeringly bad. I still can't really believe it actually happened.

All low points mentioned on previous posts just made me
love and support my club more

However two games really did make me question how long
I would continue watching City

Macclesfield away Div 2

I was playing on better pitches and thought if this gets
any worse my dream of playing for City may come true

Second was against Crewe at Maine Road.

Steve Jones, played for Crewe and he had played for me the
year before for a team I managed.

As I said wondered how long I would be watching us for the
fear of playing against us or the dream of playing for us etc ....

Difficult to pinpoint 5 bad points out of the hundreds we have had to endure over the years.

Anyway, since 75 when I first went, the worst moments:

(1) by far - our first home game vs Soton 89 after promotion but also the first game we played at home after my brother had died. To be in the same spot we had always been for years and welcoming the players back without him tore me apart. Typically, we lost 2-1 with Lake and Gayle doing a tango together to let Danny Wallace score one of the goals.

(2) Losing at home to Bury in the league. I am from Bury and lived there most of my life and never expected us to play them in the league but to lose pathetically at home to them was the ultimate embarrassment. That was the day of Makin's call to GMR which we listened to on the way home. It was well timed!

(3) Got to agree with the OP on this one. When the 2nd goal went in vs Gillingham it was the closest I ever came to considering jacking it in. I hadn't missed a single City game ( H&A) for about 9 years at that point but the mere thought of making that trip to Millwall et al again the season after and for the forseeable future made we wonder what I was doing with my life.

(4) The Cup Replay 81. I was 9 and it was the greatest day of my life to be at Wembley. Then we went 2-1 up and it was even better. I just remember thinking they had to get another 2 to beat us and they wouldn't be able to do it. Of course they did and I had to endure watching that goal (and thousands of times since) it really broke my heart. To try and assuage my tears my dad said "don't worry lad we'll be back to win it soon." I believed him! (daft twat)

(5) The decision to move to the new stadium. I was totally against it. I loved Maine Road as it held so many memories and emotional ties. It's never been quite the same for me since we moved.
