can't see how this can be won from air strikes alone, once isis have rounded up a few hundred woman and kids and planted them in among themselves it will be impossible for the US to strike targets without killing innocents, i think this will end up a massive ground war

There will have to be a ground war but it doesn't need to be US troops. If all the heavy artillery is destroyed from the air the Iraqi forces(as disparate as they are) should have superiority quite quickly.
