40 Years Ago Today Middlesbrough Went Out With a Bang!

Nice one Josh. It used to be routine in those days, if there were enough of you in a van, to go to the local police station post-match and get someone out!

A great post.40 years are gone and so is going to the game in the back of a transit van sitting on a crate, missing kick off just because, turning up and paying on the gate.huge wagon wheels, that bloke who put up the HT scores. Was it better then?

Up and down the country in a Bury Van Hire full of bodies and beer, what wasn't there to like.
Crazy days

Great post.

I still have nightmares about Boro in 1980. Bosko Jankovic scored a last minutes equaliser and I thought that might prevent any issues outside as the locals would be happy.....how wrong I was, carnage. They knew we were from Manchester as we didnt have tear tattoos on our faces or cut here tattoos on our necks.

Fast forward to 2004 and a Monday night game at Boro.
My mate and I went into a pub, ordered, walked into the next room and in there were about 20 Boro lads in their mid 40s, all with tattoos on their faces and necks....Im thinking some of this lot must be from my horrendous 1980 visit.
It was too late to do anything other than sit down and hope for the best but to our surprise they came over and chatted with us and informed us that this was the nearest pub to The Riverside they could go in to due to a number of them being on matchday banning orders.

As you say, where has 40 years gone.

Just as an aside, how long did it take to get to Middlesborugh in '84. It takes fuckin' hours by train these days, and propably the price of a FOC ST, and if yer leave it late in the day then it's travel across two days.

Anyway, it looks as though yer were a bona fide hooligan. You might want to meet Oakie 'n jimharri!
Boro away, August 1965.

Buzzers debut, 1-1.

300 City die hards on the boro covered end behind the goal.

Not a sign of tension or trouble afore, during or after.

A bit of boxing with Sunnerlund fans at York Station when we changed trains on the way back....promoted at Rotherham in May.

60 years ago next year and I can recall everything about the day.

Great post Blue, and brings back plenty of memories for me in my younger days following City (late70's-80's)!
Although Middlesborough is one away I've never been to, and judging by some of the tear ups we've had with them at Maine Road, it sounds like a tough place to go!
Around 5 years ago I was working up there and found the people a friendly bunch, just like us!
Anyway, love these stories of those great days!
Welcome back!

24/09/1955BlackpoolHD12-0

The only things I can recall about this game is the colour of the two teams - sky blue 'n tangerine - and the colour of the pitch - green! Everything else I need to look up!

Went up there agin many times including 1973 I think...lost 3-0 & Willie Donachie sent off.

Ambushed with my late father and sister + mates in Ayresome Park and had to pick up Tommy Salisbury from A+E for the rum home.

Settled it at Maine Road later the season when City had huge mobs out all over Maine Rd and Moss Side.

The smoggies were running into house to escape.

A coach was set on fire on the car park, minibuses overturned and cars wrecked.

The Chief Constable of Cleveland police wrote to GMP complaining that GMP did nothing to protect the smoggies.

Fuck em !!
