40th anniversary of Marc Bolan's death 16th Sept

BBC4 had a documentary on last night about him followed by a TOTP compilation of glam rock bands, Trex, Bowie, Slade, Sweet, mud, Wizzard, Alice Cooper, Roxy and more. Following that a doc on Elton John from the early days. Brilliant night's watch.

Joined the middle of the glam rock one and carried on to Elton. Those Friday night beeb 2 music progs are gems. Must've been fed up at having to re-edit saville out of them all though.

I used to run around with an old hippy chick who worshipped Mark Bolan. She would always be listening to Ride A White Swan or Jeepster when I went to her place. I think she ended up buying me Electric Warrior. I was much more impressed with Bolan when I found out that he used Flo and Eddie on backing vocals with Tony Visconti producing. Lyrics like "I drive a Rolls Royce/Cause Its Good For My Voice" there's a naive brilliance to that. Too bad he's not still with us. Would love to see what he would make of "The Voice" and all that shit....

You can see who a young Johnny Depp modelled himself on from the top pics.

Absolutely mate...but I reckon he modelled himself on Adam Ant who modelled himself maybe off Marc Bolan.

Bolan was good, indeed.
However, he modelled himself on Syd Barrett, so much so that he walked into the Pink Floyd management office one day saying he wanted a contract and that he wanted to be like Syd Barrett. There's a piccy of Syd on the cover of 'A Nice Pair' (1975? re-issue of the first two Floyd albums) and just about everyone that sees that piccy (myself included at first) asks why is there a picture of Marc Bolan on a Floyd album?

Then there was 'The Hawkwind Incident'. On Youtube there's a clip of Hawkwind miming to Quark, Strangeness and Charm' on the Bolan show (think that was recorded at Granada TV?) and Dave Brock isn't there, he refused to appear on the show; he hated Bolan because he believed that Bolan had ripped off 'Children of the Sun' and re-arranged it into 'Children of the Revolution'. Result - Bolan made money, Hawkwind didn't.
