47 | Phil Foden - 2025/26

so he will have plenty to keep him occupied with the size of it

What I really want City to do - and I've said this before on here - is give Phil a nice big contract for 4-5 years, tell him he can take next season off to get himself right again, and let him know we've got his back throughout. There is room for sentimentality in football and our Phil deserves some.
And they have done. 4 year extension.

Fantastic news.

He's not right physically behind the scenes, or mentally. It'll come out eventually. I've heard everything from IBD to hypochondria to full-on depression. It's possibly all three. But regardless of what it actually is the other players are worried about him and the club need to do right by him.

I respect the sentiment but give a player a year off who is supposed to be in their prime? Whats the benefit? That we hopefully get a better version back in 27/28?
Have his issues been confirmed or is it pure speculation/excuse making on our part?

Next season is Phil's time to shape up or be shipped off... he's had 2 seasons off it now. Been given far more leeway than any other player under Pep. Why does he deserve more?

We got titles to try to win.

I'm in no way writing him off, I just think he needs to be here and be contributing. We are one of the best teams on the planet, we can't be hanging around waiting for players in hope they come good again if we're to stay in that bracket.
Id start by getting him back in for rest of season in place of Semenyo, see if the new contract puts some fizz back in his game.

But he's not in his prime is he. Hence the offer to give him some time off.

He deserves more because of the reasons I outlined in the post you quoted and in other posts I've made in this thread.

He started younger than most so unlike them his prime would be earlier than the usual. He should have been there now, having maintained the 23/24 levels.. and like those who started early(Rooney et al) his levels will drop when others would be in their primes.

The reasons in your post are pure speculation though.. has all these illnesses both physical and mental yet is in the squad and getting minutes every week, make it make sense? Why is he not getting time off?

Could end up like the rashford deal if it doesn’t get better next season. Footballers are privileged indeed.

What’s crazy is that despite how bad he’s been and despite not scoring since last year, Foden is still our 2nd highest scorer after Haaland this season.

Well the comments on the BBC Sport article are as ugly and toxic as you’d expect.

I see none of the licence fee goes towards moderating those. Some truly hideous things being said, it’s like a Daily Mail article.

I wish people would stop comparing Foden to Rashford. They are nothing alike.

Phil has clearly been going through something. Whether it’s mental health, physical health, or both.

Rashford was/is just a lazy, toxic ****.

Literally the only similarity they have is the came through their respective team’s academies.

100% this.

Phil is the only person at the club with more credit in the bank than Guardiola and has more than earned a bit of ‘special treatment’.

must have the best agent like Grealish. Not sure how they pulled off a 4+1

I wonder what the wages he’s secured.

Absolutely criminal he hasn’t helped the team in a meaningful way for so long even during this title race.

But he bleeds so blue so must continue to back him.

It’s so frustrating I can’t give up on him I still believe he’s gonna save us in one of these final 4 games. He’s gonna score a screamer (was supposed to be yesterday) but I still believe

Our top scoring midfielder this season even though he hasn't played well since December. The club needs to make sure we start getting the best out of him again. Hopefully after the Summer he finds his form again because when he's at it, he's an incredible player.
