Only have five days to explore with a rented car, with my brother.

Would love some recommendations on first hand experience to places or activities to do.

Cheers.

I like the sound of visiting Pompeii and Rome is a definite for us anyway but ideally, we would like to go a new place every day to experience a bit of everything.

Not keen on Naples and it seems to have bad feedback.

Venice also is an option.

places I've been to and can recommend:

Genoa - got the most impressive aquarium I've ever seen (knocks spots off the Home Depot mega-one they built in Atlanta that a former girlfriend bought me a membership to)

Pisa - not that far to drive from from Genoa, the leaning tower is unbelievable to see in person

Venice - quite a peculiar place & very picturesque; but watch out for all the dogshit that's on the street

Rome - a must see (and you could spend a long time there.. craziest pizza slices with insane toppings are to be found opposite Trevi's Fountain) but watch out for the pick-pocket gangs you'll see working the tourists, sometimes they'll be little groups of kids

Italian Riviera - French Riviera - Monaco (can knock 'em all out if you're in a car and drive through Nice Cannes & St Tropez etc etc in the process) and you can visit the Royal Palace if you stop long enough in Monaco to take it all in, including the F1 track.

- in the winter Cervinia is amazing (and if you're into summer mountains you might still do the Valle D'Aosta) and you can ski across into Switzerland in the shadow of the Matterhorn if you've got your passport on your person.

I've also been to a handful of other cities in Italy, but nothing in particular to recommend about them, so that completes my limited list - although I'm sure they'll be lots of other recommendations from people who have visited other parts of Italy.

Ciao!

Tuscany I'm sure there has been a few threads on here. No beaches though.
There are nice beaches at Viareggio and Forte di Marmi - but eating and drinking there is mighty expensive.

Probably can't do them all in 5 days. So bin Venice and go to Arezzo instead.

Or Spend 5 days in Rome.

great point Gelson.. if you're doing 5 days and go into Rome you've got a decision to make, because you can easily spend an inordinate amount of time there, so much to see if that's what you're looking for.. if you're looking to see as much as you can, and over a good geographical spread you'll need to specifically target things accordingly.

I've driven from Bologna to Pisa, up the coast (very pretty route too) and into Genoa and onto Monaco (unique principality you might enjoy) all within two days taking in the sights - and I wasn't even driving like Steve McQueen, but you could split these up into three days and hit up the aquarium (if that's your thing is it amazing) in an afternoon/morning very comfortably, if that would allow you time to hit up any other targets - ?
