5 | John Stones - 2025/26

I think the club wanted to sell stones the summer just gone tbh, there was a lot of reporting early on in the window that we wanted him gone, and in the end I imagine he just refused to leave, he's on big money and he would have had to go to everton or something.

Incredible player but renewing an older player with his injury record would just be mad.

Now he's been chosen for England again we'll get the usual spiel about he'll come back injured. Ah well, that's life, I'll just have to keep my defending him wits about me. :-) :-)
Let’s revisit this post when the squad is announced for the Everton game.

While he’s under contract at City, it’s almost impossible to envisage any scenario where he leaves. However, I’ve no doubts that some club or other will pick him up if he does NOT get a City extension, and he could get a decent 2 yr deal out of it.

Sadly, we all know or believe the same thing:

When he’s fit, he can be world class, but he’s just not fit often enough for the money City spend on him.

Quandary.

We have enough depth (lots of it on loan!) in Defence to be able to live without him and could probably cover the wages of 3 young defenders with his salary alone.

With Nunes, Lewis, Khusanov, Dias, Ake, Gvardiol, O’Reilly, and Ait Nouri, we have two+ for every position, even before we talk about the good youngsters on loan elsewhere, earning their stripes!

Like Akanji, Stones is surplus to requirements, IF those requirements are performing for 90 mins at least once per week, if not twice! Sadly, he’s not showing he can do that so far this season, so how do City reward him with a new deal, unless it’s at a greatly reduced cost to the club and he mentors the next generation of defenders.

Truth is he has been well looked after by City, mainly Pep behind that, but he has robbed a living for a good few years now, his appearance stats at City are nothing short of shocking really, I have wanted to sit on the fence, but after reading his "I love playing for England" comments, I'm a little bit more bemused than I was before.

Pisses me off the tribe like him and Walker and Grealish not knowing where their bread is buttered, Stones even quoted in saying he has had some of the best moments in his career playing for England.....why?

Best at card school or table tennis and darts?

We all know (when fit) he is a calm and composed player, but the amount of games played in recent seasons is pretty shite, and should count himself lucky he is still part of this squad

Got to be saying bye bye this summer, surely
What are they supposed to say when asked about playing for their country?

I've no idea

Dunno what to say then, but I believe he's said a bit too much, if they'd won a WC or even a Euro's then I would kind of get it, (these best moments in his career), you know like Rodri has, but there is no way any City fan should take heart from his comments, ask any match going fan about him and majority will say waste of time, I was 50/50 but not now.

Better get them all to stop his song then I reckon

I suppose some supporters don’t understand what playing for your country means to some players because of the apathy they have towards the national team.

Players careers are short. It’s up to them how they live it. If he values playing for his country the most, then he’s clearly patriotic and it’s the pinnacle for him. It’s not the same for every player. We just to love complain.

I understand alright, I'm 54 and seen England win fuck all, more to the point seen them fail miserably, Stones will be remembered for what he achieved at City though (albeit not as many games as it could have been, not the national team when his career finishes

Are you saying a player can only enjoy playing for a team if they won stuff?

Now come on, you know I don't mean that, don't worry I get it now, we leave it there to avoid a full blown row
It was a question based on you saying you could understand it if they'd won a WC or a Euros. But you're right let's leave it there.
