5 | John Stones - 2025/26

The best medical staff and sports science people in the world and they "can't explain" his injury ...

Haha time to knuckle down and play. Lip service isn't useful to anyone

Thanks for that devastating contribution
It's time for him to go.

Stones wants consistent football if he's going to make the World Cup. We can't give that to him with the amount of CBs we have.

City want reliable defenders if we're going to correct the awful defence of last season. Stones can't give us that any more as he's been consistently injured for 3 years.

I'm sure the guy with a year left on £250k who has huge injury question marks and is considered one of the best defenders to ever play for the club would wish to stay. But we aren't running a charity here and it makes sense to move him on.

If thats what City want they would have told him that and he would be gone.

If you actually listen to what Guardiola says thats not the case. Because they know what they are talking about unlike 50% here.

You have no idea whether City have told him that.

They have, btw.

But you have no idea of that before about 4 seconds ago.

It might make sense, but it's unlikely to happen because of the points you make. Given his wages and injury record, he's only leaving on loan with us paying a huge chunk. I also don't really see the benefit of trying to force out a player who's homegrown and only has a year on his contract. It's not as if he's freeing up a slot, and there's still a chance that he has a more injury-free season and can leave with his head held high at the end of his contract.
That's some very fair points tbh. Didn't really consider it from a HG aspect.

still freeing up a slot, just as a sub. We've 30 senior players in the mix right now and 9ish coming back from loan in various stages of development/career for 20 places a week.

As good as he is, I feel like a huge part of a teams defensive stability is consistency and it can often compensate for lower talent levels. I want a defence that is primarily the same week over week. And if he’s someone that can only come in for the big games, I worry about disrupting patterns of play that have been established by those that are playing every week.

This would be a good outcome for all. Stones will be needed this season to play and help the young CBs. I think he will have a good season and then anything is possible.

Don’t like to single out a player.

If the option is stones, Ake or Akanji then it has to be Akanji. His form has dropped badly. Cost little so should be easy enough to move. Also might give us the final push to buy a proper RB.

Not his decision. If we want a fully functioning, manageable squad, there isn’t room for too many players who are only occasionally available.

One or two of Stones, Akanji and Ake need to go. Develop Khusanov and Reis instead.

Shame as I really like all three. (Especially Nathan.) However, the club took the difficult - but correct IMO - decision not to extend KdB’s contract and is also playing hard ball with Grealish. These guys may be much loved by many but can’t justify astronomical wages when playing part time.

Absolutely his decision. He has a valid contract

One alternative would be for the club to pay astronomical sums to each player to terminate their contracts.

If Pep insists on a small squad, the club will have to pay the price.

Not a criticism but something has to give when you have a number of sub-optimal contributors on huge wages. Paying up is the most wasteful option. Subsidised sales or loans are a bit more palatable.

One factor will be squad places for the PL and UEFA.
