5 live just now - Stadium Increase

Re: 5 live just now.

this is a typical derby day news story.

Any actual quotations from the club?

We will fill a 200,000 seater stadium, we will be huge blahde fucking blah.

and in a few years when we don't have a massive 80k seater stadium and are still not selling out our Carling Cup games we'll be left with egg on our faces.

as said in a previous topic, main redevelopment right now for the club is the campus and getting the pubic transport infrastructure in place to deal with fans as right now there's issues getting out of the stadium even during carling cup games

Maybe a non-story i.e no truth in it. But the need is there with every League game a sell out, and Financial Fair Play forcing club to look at increasing revenue. The questions are when and how. Extend or re-build from scratch

Exactly. For me a new stadium seems the most most viable option. Why? The disruption involved in extending. The technical issues involved in extending. The cost/benefit of a new build v extension. Not to mention the fact that the finished article would be a compromise with an extension against the opportunity to send a statement and create something special with a new build. Bearing in mind the past record of our owner in striving for excellence, a new stadium seems more likely?

My reliable horse says the max we can extend to is 60k. The Stadium simply can't be extended anymore.
How reliable is your horse?

-- Sun Oct 23, 2011 11:57 am --

There were three options looked at as part of a feasibility study soon after the takeover. The new training complex rules out option 3, which was a "fuck me" 80k+ stadium on that land. Option 2 was a new stadium on the North Car Park up to 75k capacity. I understood that a new stadium was the preferred option

The stadium as it stands cannot support more than a 60k capacity so it would need a completely new roof structure/supports. The main problem the owners had with it was the relative lack of corporate facilities, which bring in the big money. This isn't about being able to fill seats as such. People paying £30/40 a seat don't bring in the money we need.

We're doing well on the commercial revenue side and obviously also on the media money side now we're in the CL but we've still got a lot of ground to make up on ticket money. Most of that will come from corporate hospitality so I suspect the most likely option is a new tier mainly of corporate seats/boxes
That all makes sense but haven't sold out the corporate bit of CB once yet this season. Always a massive gap in the middle.

Seems Utd and City have been able to attract commercial sponsors, but getting Corporate backsides on seats for games week in week out is going to be difficult in Manchester when most Financial Services companies are headquartered in London.

City could easily get another 15k per League game at the moment paying £500 per season ticket = £7.5m p.a from gate revenue alone. That would pay for a David Silva which makes the difference on the pitch.

We wouldn't lose any capacity we'd just get wet while they built the third tier and put the roof back. At the time the stadium was built the foundations were put in to support a third tier all round and roof designed to be taken off. The capacity was limited by the design of the stadium at the time of the Commonwealth games. So imagine a stadium the height of the Colin Bell Stand all the way round. Capacity would increase by between 10000 and 12000 each end (68000 - 72000). No need to move.

Your horse must be assuming we don't join the whole thing up.

We're where we need to be and we are building a fortress

I cant see how they can get it to 75k, 48k now, can't go lower as so close to the pitch now, but how high can u go? 60k tops surely?

At least room for 5-10 rows on the sidelines and maybe 3/4 behind each goal... but it'd mean lowering the pitch height but lots of stuff under there

Check the original plans:

Manchester City Council and Manchester 2000 (the British Olympic Bid) have selected the AMEC-led team from a shortlist of four, to develop an 80,000-seat Olympic stadium in east Manchester
