I'm not disagreeing with the fact that last 16/8 would keep the owners happy, as well as most fans, but it's strange that this should be the case. It's basically saying that we accept there are 7 teams definitely better than us, and another 8 who are about the same. That being the case, why do most people view the last two years so negatively? Last season we were certainly in a group with two of the top 7 teams, and the year before Bayern were one of the top teams and Napoli were at least one of the top 16. If we'd gone out to any of those teams in the round of 16/8 after getting out of an easy group, I suspect most people would have been pretty happy.
If we'd lost to United in the FA Cup semi in 2011 (after an easy draw to that point), would that have been any better than losing to them the next season in the 3rd round round?
I understand that getting further in the CL means more points for future seeding and more money and more positive publicity, but in terms of judging the team performance, if you're not expecting the win the whole thing, it's all about when you happen to come up against a team that's better than you. If that's in the group stages, it shouldn't be any more damning than going out to the same team in the last 8.
And just to answer the "Ajax" argument before it's mentioned - we were dreadful against them away and not good in the early part of the game at home, but would the criticisms of our performances in the CL really be that much less if we'd beaten them twice and still gone out?
