Deliberate handball on the goal line; referee fouls Mike Doyle & more… watch these highlights from 50 years ago today (follow the link):

I was at that match age 14 and travelled alone (l'm not from Manchester). No segregation in the South Stand (end where we scored 2nd half) and it kicked off big time when we scored - you can hear their lot on the clip 'Wanderers Agro, Wanderers Agro' and very scary and messy it was. I instantly perfected an identikit Noddy Holder accent I can tell you.

One thing that strikes me from that era is that the shirts are a darker shade of blue and look much better.
I see what you mean, the traditional "sky blue" sometimes looks a bit pale, perhaps suggesting a team that's not that strong. My first memory of a report on a football match is of the 1955 Cup Final, saying that Newcastle looked "dour and grim" in their black & white and something about City looking "fancy" in their light blue.

Somewhat off-topic I think L.S. Lowry once said that when he painted scenes of football/rugby matches he found red a more dynamic colour to work with than blue. Sorry for the heresy. But BTW I own nothing in that colour.

Interesting what you say about City fan LS Lowry. In his painting of Maine Rd (see image) he used artistic licence to make the railings red instead of blue or the green they were said to be back then.

Gary Pierce - still making miraculous saves against us a year after the League Cup Final. Sweet revenge in the end though. Tueart was good with either foot.

Looking at the date of this game, it must have been the weekend after the midweek game vs United and that tackle on The King by Buchan.

It was about 2.5 weeks after the derby. That was on 12 November and this was 29 November.

For a game being played in winter that pitch looks a bowling green considering all you old timers are always saying 'players these days couldn't play on the pitches back in my day" ;-)
