Mikel Arteta's England call-up would be a step into heart of darkness
If Fabio Capello decides he wants to call up Mikel Arteta, the Football Association will talk to the England manager about the wider implications of selecting a 28-year-old San Sebastian-born player ignored by Spain. The words “developing’’, “English’’ and “youth’’ are bound to feature.

Capello is not believed to be so convinced of the Evertonian’s gifts to risk an internal debate at the FA or the wrath of sections of England’s support.
Good. It would be another dispiriting lurch into the heart of darkness for the national team if Capello did summon a player who now qualifies under residency rules.
Eligibility requirements may be looser in cricket and rugby union but football needs to stand firm on this issue and the FA is right to have reservations. England must nurture players not nick the world champions’ cast-offs.
Capello seems to be focusing more on Paul Scholes, although it would be a major surprise if the 35 year-old ended his six-year international retirement.
Andy Carroll, the Newcastle United No 9 due in the city’s Crown Court in October to answer an allegation of assault in a Quayside nightclub, is definitely available for selection for England after the FA confirmed that guidelines regarding picking players facing court cases are no longer in place.
In the past, Jonathan Woodgate, Lee Bowyer, Alan Smith, James Beattie and Steven Gerrard were deemed unavailable during their legal travails, while Carroll has continued to play for the under-21s.
