A terrible day for English football and for Manchester. The memory never fades of young men killed in the flower of their lives. Roger Byrne, Eddie Coleman and Tommy Taylor would have given Brazil, Pele & Garrincha included, a run for their money in the World Cup in Sweden that summer. Those fine reporters lost too, Donny Davies "Old International" of The Manchester Guardian, and City's own Frank Swift. And then there was Duncan Edwards, the best English footballer I ever saw.
From a City supporter for nearly 70 years, Manc born and raised. Rest In Peace to all who died at Munich.

My Dad (born 1939) says that Duncan Edwards was the best player he ever saw live.

Saw this lovely piece about Donny Davies yesterday: https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...all-correspondent-died?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Also here's Gary James writing from a City perspective 10 years ago, to mark the 50th anniversary:

RIP to all those that tragically lost their lives that day.

A sad day for Manchester utd, Manchester and football.

The City players of Frank Swift's era are almost beyond living memory now for fans that follow City today. So unless they left behind stats that elevated them their exploits for City go largely unrecognized as the term 'Legend' in a footballer context is a relatively new concept. But as a boy I knew the reverence that the adult City fans talked about his unequalled talents regularly seen at City and England games.

We regularly see a gent in his 90s in the lift, either going up to or coming down from CBL3.

He recalls the players of that era, and says Peter Doherty is still the best he’s seen in a City shirt. He also told me that he never thought he’d see a better goalkeeper than Frank Swift, but when Bert came along, he did.

As you say, people of his vintage are becoming few and far between.

R. I. P. Frank and all those who lost their lives on that terrible day.
