As of two days ago there are now officially 7 billion (albeit far more eye-catching with 0's) people on the planet. It took millenia's to hit 1billion people and we have just added 1billion in a mere 12 years. 12 years to add one billion people!!! It is only expected to take until the year 2100 to reach 10 billion. I cannot fathom an Earth with 10 billion people on it.

I have a question here, fellow Blues (and anticipating some great responses hopefully), and that is what sort of world will our grandkids and great-grandkids be inheriting in the year 2100?

City still around? Most successful club of all time? Is football even played or popular anymore? What will music be like? Will everyone be governed by one government? Will there be any scenic/beautiful/historic sights left on the entire planet?

I will be long since dead and buried by then thank f.

Yep it's quite terrifying. In fact, I think this milestone was reached last week, but anyway. (nvm, didnt read your post properly) And your estimate is off, unless nothing happens we will have over 10billion people 2050. That's scary. When I was born, -82, I was approximately 4.5billionth human. The population has almost doubled since then... makes you think and kinda be happy I'm not here 2100.

Not my estimate mate, just going off what I hear and see. I would have to agree with you and with myself, by saying that yea 2100 seems a bit late to reach 10 since we are adding billions at such a rate now.

This is the bbc article I read http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-15391515

That's truly brilliant mate, and I have already bookmarked/favourited it on my computer, but......

how on earth can any of those statistics be accurate? (the obvious ones anyway) The exact population is unknown anywhere (big cities or countries) due to unreported deaths, births and such.

There is no way some of those statistics are exact. Some of them are flat out shocking as well (even surely not quite accurate). Thanks for sharing that website pal.

No worries glad you find it interesting. I bookmarked it myself as i found it fascinating. I don't know how they work out the numbers either.

However if you want something truly shocking/immoral along the same lines..

Try this:

We humans are a sick bunch. Good lord

why not every country has a set limit of kids your allowed to have... surely this would slow down the rising population if the western world allowed a max of 2 children ?

Well no mate it wouldnt, since the majority of people born today are born in the developing world. India...China....the continent of Africa...ring any bells? That China one child policy is a load of bollocks (although their population is not going to grow much more and will curtain off very shortly)....India needs all sorts of population growth issues sorted out....

Many nations in 'the West' in fact have declining populations and a lot of us have very old populations. Japan for example I think (and I could be wrong) has a population of 2/3s over 60 years old. Much of the youth of the world (ratio wise) are in places like Iran..India...Phillipines etc. where there simply is no chance that birth rates will decrease or slow down.

-- Wed Nov 02, 2011 9:19 am --
