Do you not think he’s going through a bad patch?

It’s a bit bigger than a patch imho, not sure what we should do tbh I would feel uncomfortable selling him but would be very uneasy about giving him a new bumper contract. Not sure he has had that many great games this season and last. Can’t think of any top top players who have had so many poor to average games over that length of time.

He bagged 20 goals last season tbf. Agree that his form at the moment is a concern, but don’t think it’s unreasonable to suggest that it is indeed just a bad patch, given how he’s performed for us over the last 5/6 years. Just feels like people are too quick to write players off nowadays. The likes of Stones, Gundogan and Rodri (amongst others) should serve as a reminder that players can go through bad patches and come out better for it. Too much haste these days imo.

To some extent I agree but sterling is somewhat of an enigma really in that he can go long periods of looking very average even within games But the stats from last year would suggest a player in top form. Stones can make a few errors get slated and not play for ages.

Raheem can constantly get the ball trapped between his legs, run into defenders, make bad decisions over and over again but pop up with a goal. I’ve said it before and with any player you can do a you tube compilation and make them look bad or great but with Raheem you could make very long videos of both. His ups and downs are quite dramatic.

How much trust and what sort of contract do you give to a player that can go 10 15 20 games and look average but then score 5 in 5 and not even look great in those games. People were talking about him being world class not so long ago. Silva had a great season for us was a bit average the next one(shunted around positions then dropped)

It’s an odd situation really.

even his best patch (project Restart) ended with him knocking us out of the CL with that dreadful blunder.

The first half of 17/18 is the level he set as the benchmark and he needs to get back there.

12 months ago he was probably in as strong a position as De Bruyne when it came to contract negotiations. Not as naturally talented, obviously, but three years younger and classed as homegrown which will have worked in his favour. Seems highly unlikely he’ll get a deal anywhere near as lucrative as De Bruyne at the moment though. Wouldn’t surprise me if we see little progress on that front for now. With two years left on his current deal it’s not urgent, and both sides might want to see how things pan out on the pitch over the coming months.

I don’t think you can fairly lay all of that at his door. What were the other ten players doing when we conceded those three goals?
I can lay it at him that we needed a goal to stay in and the ball came to him to keep us in the CL, an absolute sitter and he blazed it, whatever came before only became decisive because he missed the final, big glorious chance that you'd expect one of your star players to bail the team out with. Just like the ball came to him to put the Rags 3-0 down in 17/18 and he blazed it, and then he blazed it again. Don't really think he's been the same player since that day despite his periods of good form, the match-winning instinct has gone. I looked back at his 100 goals for City video and his early finishes were quite a lot more natural finishes than they've become, something's changed in his psyche in his time with us.

A lot of players go through bad patches of form. Mane for me has been Liverpool’s most dangerous player for the past couple of years. Every time he got on the ball, he had the drive and looked like creating something every time he got on the ball. Recently though, he hasn’t looked the same player. I don’t get that feeling that he’s unstoppable when I watch him. Same thing goes for Sterling. Mane will come back into form because he’s a quality player and I expect Sterling will at some point.

I actually don’t think Sterling has that many suitors. When you factor in his wages the suitors become really scarce so I don’t think we can get much for him

We have to remember this is not the first time he has gone on a long bad streak. He was terrible for us last season from January to March also. I actually feel sorry for him sometimes because you can actually see he tries to do things but he is just not that talented.
